The Assistant Scientist, under the close supervision of the PI in the Lewis Katz School of Medicine's Shriners Pediatric Research Center, conducts research activities in a new research project to determine whether molecules in fetal-derived exosomes can predict which at-risk fetuses will be born with fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) or one of its partial forms (fetal alcohol spectrum disorders; FASD), the most common cause of developmental intellectual disability in the US. Performs biochemical and molecular assays, maintain inventories, order supplies, and generally will participate in the organization of the laboratory. Responsibilities include: Involved in blood processing and urine EtG tests Assist Dr. Darbinian in organizing cytokine/chemokine studies for this project Responsible for preparation of exosomal RNA and protein samples from serum, from EtOH-used subjects and controls Assist Dr. Darbinian in studies related to the isolation of exosomal mRNA and miRNA from brain-derived exosomes from maternal blood from EtOH-exposed subjects and characterization of fetal neural and OL-exosomes Performs other duties as assigned. Required Education & Experience: Bachelor's degree in a related area of study and two years of related research experience preferred. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. Required Skills & Abilities: *Demonstrated ability to perform all the biochemical and molecular assays, maintain inventories, order supplies, and generally will participate in the organization of the laboratory *Ability to be involved in blood processing and urine EtG tests *Assist in organizing cytokine/chemokine studies for this project *Demonstrated proficiency in immunohistochemistry, confocal microscopy, electron microscopy and imaging program such as Imaris. *Demonstrated ability to operate all standard laboratory and office equipment including MS Office and Adobe photoshop. *Demonstrated proficiency in working with excel spreadsheets for database. *Demonstrated ability to work independently. *Ability to perform multiple tasks simultaneously. *Ability to quickly learn new techniques. *Excellent technical and analytical skills. *Ability to work in a team environment. *Strong written and oral communication skills.
