Status: Part-time, Seasonal

Department: Visitor Interpretive Center (VIC)

Reports to: Director, VIC

Hourly Rate: $18.00/hour

Description: Paul Smith’s College is seeking to hire a part-time Summit Steward for summer 2024. This position is an opportunity to gain experience in public interpretation, environmental education, and historic preservation. As the number of visitors to the Adirondacks continues to increase, this position is critical to informing and educating the public on important backcountry behaviors and issues while also sharing knowledge about the rich history of the Adirondack Park.

The Summit Steward will be stationed on the summit of St. Regis Mountain to interact with and educate visitors on the historical and cultural values of the mountain, the New York State Fire Tower Network, the Adirondack Forest Preserve, and responsible stewardship and recreation. The steward will be trained in these areas and will learn skills for public interpretation.

Hours: The Summit Steward will work 8 hours per day, Friday – Sunday, from May 24 -October 14, 2024 (i.e., 20 weeks). Weekend and holiday work is required. Staff will be required to attend a paid training session prior to May 28. It will be determined later if this training will be on Paul Smith’s College campus, virtual, or a combination. For everyone's safety, this is subject to change at any time.

Duties & responsibilities:

  • Greet and interact with visitors on the summit of the mountain and provide educational messaging and information about responsible stewardship and land ethic.

  • Perform all job duties while stationed outside on the summit of St. Regis Mountain during entire shift, in often inclement weather conditions.

  • Trail work and tower maintenance/restoration duties are also required as time allows.

  • Hike to the summit of St. Regis Mountain at the start of each shift, a moderate hike that ascends 1,266 ft. in 3.4 miles (one way).

Qualifications:

  • All education and experience levels are considered; applicants with coursework in natural resources, environmental studies, environmental science, education, recreation, history, or related fields are preferred.

  • Ability to work with a broad range of diverse individuals and groups to form a safe and inclusive workplace.

  • Capable of working independently and in inclement weather.

  • High level of motivation and enthusiasm, willing to initiate interaction with the public.

  • Ability to spend extended amount of time on your feet and hike the mountain for each workday.

  • Ability to work all weekends & holidays (required).
