Job Description

We seek a part time Research Associate in the Department of Geology & Environmental Earth Science at Miami University to assist with lab management and research in the area of isotope geochemistry, and manage operations of the International Association of GeoChemistry (IAGC).

The position will be a one-year, non-benefit eligible appointment with the possibility of renewal in subsequent years.

The Research Associate will be expected to manage the isotope geochemistry clean lab and mass spectrometry lab.

Duties include training and supervision of lab users, laboratory and instrument maintenance, data quality assurance, oversight of radiation and environmental health and safety compliance, and laboratory financial management. Laboratory technique development and adaptation for analysis of diverse geologic and environmental materials expected, with opportunities to collaborate on field- and lab-based research. Other responsibilities include managing operations of the International Association of GeoChemistry (IAGC).

Minimum Qualifications Required: Master's degree in Geology or related field, with at least 4 years of experience in radiogenic isotope geochemistry, including rock sample preparation, mineral separation, clean room protocols, chemical purification techniques for radiogenic isotope systems (including Sr, Nd, Pb, Hf, Re, Os, U, Th, Ra, Po), and operation of thermal ionization mass spectrometers (TIMS) and multi-collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometers (MC-ICP-MS).

Consideration will be given to applicants with research experience in volcanology/petrology and applied isotope geochemistry including nuclear forensics/environmental radiation, with expertise in the Re-Os isotope system and U-series disequilibria, and more than 4 years experience operating and maintaining a ThermoFinnigan Triton TIMS and Nu Instruments Nu Plasma P3 MC-ICP-MS. Knowledge of the breadth of applied geochemistry in the international realm is desired for the IAGC component of the job.
