Position Announcement

 

Join our team as the Assistant Director, where you'll lead a dedicated group of accessibility counselors and staff to ensure students receive the accommodations they need to thrive. In this role, you'll collaborate closely with the Senior Director, faculty, staff, and university departments to strengthen accessibility practices and champion universal design principles, creating an inclusive environment for all students and visitors.

 

Summary of Responsibilities

 

• Leadership: Assists the Senior Director in overseeing the operational processes of Accessibility Services, including evaluating processes and data collection/analysis to develop, implement, and supervise best practices for providing accommodations to students and visitors.

• People Management: Supervises full-time, part-time, and student employees. Responsibilities include acting as search chair on hiring committees, evaluating work performance for mid-year and annual reviews, training new employees in job duties, and providing ongoing opportunities for professional development.

 

• Counseling: Counsel and advise students/visitors regarding their rights and responsibilities under the ADA. Use professional judgment to determine and approve reasonable accommodations for students/visitors based on an interactive process, including the review of disability documentation, history of accommodations, and student self-report. Evaluate and apply assessment data from psychological evaluations, individual education plans, ADHD assessments, and related disability documentation to determine disability eligibility and accommodation needs.

 

• Relationship Management: Collaborates with other departments, agencies, and organizations on and off campus to increase awareness of services for students with disabilities and facilitate connections for students. Responsibilities include giving presentations, training faculty/staff, and attending outreach events on and off campus. Includes occasional nights/weekends.

 

• Additional duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications / Licenses / Certifications

 

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a master's degree in a directly related field and two years experience related to the summary of duties.

Preferred Qualifications

Master's degree or higher in disability studies, special education, vocational rehabilitation, or a closely related field, and three years experience related to the summary of duties.

 

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities

 

Knowledge

 

• Knowledge of the American Disability Act (1990) and the Amendments Act, Vocational Rehabilitation Act, Section 504 (1973), GRAMA, FERPA, HIIPA, and other federal and state statutes and case law.

 

• Knowledge of a variety of disabilities, their impact, and accommodations including accessible technology that provide access to an academic environment.

 

• Knowledge of best practices in accessibility, accommodation services, and assisted technology.

General knowledge of counseling and advising techniques.

• Experience supervising staff.

 

Skills

 

• Excellent listening skills and the ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.

 

• Skilled in the use of technology such as Microsoft Office (word processing, Excel, Power Point), virtual meeting software, and the ability to learn new/emerging technology and software.

• Effective oral and written communication including presentation skills.

 

Abilities

 

• Ability to interpret diagnostic information including medical, ps chological, and learning assessments to determine reasonable accommodation services.

 

• Ability to apply legislative and judicial concepts to the decision-making process to determine and facilitate reasonable accommodation services, academic adjustment, and access.

 

• Ability to balance interests of students with the learning expectations and requirements of courses and academic programs.

 

• Ability to work with individuals and departments to problem-solve, work collaboratively, and resolve access issues.

 

• Ability to develop and implement onboarding, training, and evaluation practices for counseling staff and access assistants.

 

• Ability to stay current in best practices in the field of accessibility services in higher education.

 

• Ability to work occasional evening or weekend hours.
