Reporting to the Environmental Engagement Lead and working closely with the Baffinland Community Liaison Officer (BLCO) in Pond Inlet, the Shipping Monitor is responsible for monitoring and reporting the daily shipping activities associated with Baffinland Iron Mines Corporation (Baffinland), and act as a liaison between the community of Pond Inlet, the Mittimatalik Hunter and Trappers Organization, and Baffinland.

Main Accountabilities

  1. Observe and monitor the route of vessels contracted by Baffinland travelling to and from Milne Port using an online computer software, exactEarth Automated Information System (AIS);

  2. Observe and document general vessel activity in Pond Inlet (e.g., cruise ships, research vessels, sea lift and fuel freight); Conduct ad-hoc visual observations including note/photo-taking of general daily vessel activity and marine wildlife from the shores of Pond Inlet;

  3. Implement Pond Inlet-based components of Baffinland’s Shipping Communications Protocol, particularly with regards to informing hunters and community members about vessel traffic;

  4. Provide information to community members upon request on Baffinland’s existing shipping mitigation and management measures;

  5. Act as the primary liaison between the community of Pond Inlet and Baffinland to discuss and/or resolve potential community concerns related to Baffinland shipping and Inuit harvesting;

  6. Compile data and prepare daily reports on shipping activity, visitors, concerns and marine wildlife observations;

  7. Support the preparation of an end-of-year summary report on shipping activities/marine wildlife observations and associated communications;

  8. Answer incoming phone/radio calls, emails, and faxes and relay these incoming messages to the appropriate person at Baffinland;

  9. Using communication information provided by Baffinland, share shipping updates on local radio, marine VHF radio and Baffinland Shipping Facebook Group Page to inform residents/hunters of Pond Inlet on Baffinland Vessel activity;

  10. Attend community-based information sessions, as needed.

Main Qualifications

High School diploma

Inuit resident of Pond Inlet and enrolled under the Nunavut Agreement

Minimum one (1) year of experience using computers including data entry and tracking

Experience with using marine VHF marine or local radio is an asset

Ability to speak, read, and write in both English and Inuktitut;

Digital Literacy skills: Knowledge of digital tools and technology. Proficient with standard office software such as Microsoft Office;

Familiar with social media platforms like Facebook;

Adaptability/Flexibility skills: Ability to adapt to changes, learn new skills, and take on new challenges;

Interpersonal Effectiveness skills: Ability to influence the views and behaviour of others through persuasion and encouragement and manage conflict or other sensitive issues tactfully and effectively. Ability to adapt behaviour to a wide range of people;

Ability to work and reside in Pond Inlet during shipping season (July 1 – November 1);

Ability to work shifts as required:

o Day shift - 8am to 5pm

o Evening shift - 4 pm – 1am

o Night shift - 12 am – 9am
