Thames Valley Council for Community Action WIC Breastfeeding Peer Counselor in Norwich, Connecticut

As part of the WIC team, the WIC Breastfeeding Peer Counselor is a paraprofessional support person who gives basic breastfeeding information and encouragement to WIC pregnant and breastfeeding mothers. Additional duties include: data collection, documentation of contacts, client centered counseling methods, issuing appropriate educational materials including websites, recognizing limits in scope of practice and referring moms to their Health Care Provider, Lactation Counselor and WIC Nutritionist or Coordinator. In addition, this position may require working some evenings, weekends and a flexible work schedule to meet the needs of the clinic.

Required Skills

  • Has been or is a participant of the WIC program for a minimum of one year.

  • Has breastfed at least one baby for a minimum of one year (does not have to be currently breastfeeding).

  • Effective communication skills, oral and in written, with clients, the public and all levels of program staff/agency, especially about breastfeeding.

  • Strong customer service skills

  • Able to work independently during non traditional office hours, including evenings and a weekend day.

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.

  • Spanish speaking preferred.

  • Valid driver’s license, good driving record, and insured vehicle.
