This is an open Career Service Health Support Technician position with the Department of Health in Lee County.

Your Specific Responsibilities:

This Health Support Technician position is under the supervision of the Medical Laboratory Technologist II – SES and is headquartered at the Florida Department of Health in Lee County, Pondella site. This is a responsible position requiring the ability to plan and act independently as well and as part of a team. Incumbent handles protected health information following Department of Health, HIPAA, and Information Security and Privacy Policy. Employee abides by State/Federal laws governing health information. This is a “need to know” position with access to the following information sets: Hepatitis, HIV, STDs, HMS, lab, and medical records.

Incumbent will have excellent oral and written communication skills; be very organized; conscientious and detail-oriented; have good interpersonal skills; be compassionate with positive attitude; be knowledgeable of medical terminology with skills of counseling, teaching and educating clients; ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment; work with community agencies and make appropriate referrals. Incumbent will have understanding and knowledge of cultural diversity especially with sensitivity to clients’ alternative lifestyles. Bi-lingual in English and Spanish or English and Creole preferred.

Outreach

  • Works in conjunction with outreach, health education, and Disease Intervention Specialists staff during outreach activities.

  • Participates in health fairs, community projects and other local projects that will fulfill outreach/prevention responsibilities for the citizens of Lee County.

  • This professional must be able to do counseling and testing at various sites throughout the community.

    Jail Linkage Support

  • Brings at-risk inmates to testing.

  • Assists in linking clients with positive/reactive test results to treatment and other needed follow-ups.

  • Screens for HIV, Syphilis, and Hepatitis C through blood draw.

  • Obtains urine and/or self-collected swabs for Chlamydia and Gonorrhea testing.

  • Arranges for inmate immunizations for Hepatitis A, B, flu, and Gardasil as needed and available.

    Health Support Functions

  • Assists in the collection and processing of blood specimens. These include: drawing blood, collecting patient self-collected urine and swab specimens from persons served for laboratory testing; using proper techniques and tubes, and assuring proper post phlebotomy care.

  • Orders tests in HMS.

  • Assists staff in completing and maintaining records of clients.

    Job Enrichment

  • Attends and participates in staff development trainings; team and staff meetings; in-service; and continuing education.

  • Prepares records, submits documents, and reports as required.

  • Maintains employee activity reports (EARs).

  • Submits timesheets in a timely fashion.

    Other job-related requirements for this position:

  • Incumbent may be required to work before, during and/or beyond normal work hours or days in the event of an emergency. Emergency duty required of the incumbent includes working in special needs or Red Cross Shelters, or performing other emergency duties including, but not limited to, responses to or threats involving any disaster or threat of disaster, man-made or natural.

  • Incumbent must possess a valid Florida Driver License and have a motor vehicle to carry out these duties.

  • Must have a current CPR certification or obtain such certification during employment.

  • This position is authorized to transport confidential information outside of established DOH-Lee facilities and must comply with parameters defined in DOHP 50-10.

  • Training required upon hire: Hepatitis 101, Hepatitis Virology, HIV 500/501, HIV/Hepatitis/syphilis rapid test administration, HIV Orasure testing, Gonorrhea and Chlamydia Aptima test specimen collection, STD 101 for Clinicians, other trainings as available.

  • Selected immunizations or titers and/or periodic screening for tuberculosis may be recommended for this position.

  • This position will abide by all state and federal laws, rules, and DOH policies and procedures.

  • This position is classified as sensitive. This individual will perform tasks defined as sensitive and handles confidential

information. Background screening is a condition of employment.
