Job Description
The Batten College of Engineering & Technology at Old Dominion University invites applications from experienced, accomplished, and visionary individuals to serve as Chair of the Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Department starting in June 2025. The Chair is expected to provide leadership in departmental education, research, and outreach activities in alignment with the strategic plan of the College and the University.
Specific responsibilities include:
Planning and executing strategic initiatives for the department.
Interacting with the college and university leadership.
Mentoring, supporting, and evaluating faculty and staff.
Supporting key research thrusts in the department and the college.
Fostering interdisciplinary research and industry partnerships.
Improving curriculum design and leading accreditation efforts.
Planning and scheduling courses offerings.
Demonstrating commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives.
Working closely with the advisory board of the department.
Overseeing the budget.
Performing research and scholarly activities.
Teaching courses in related areas.
Developing educational and research relationships with industry and government laboratories in the Hampton Roads region.

Minimum required education and/or special licenses, registrations, trainings, or certifications
Candidates must have an earned doctoral degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a closely related field, and be eligible for an appointment at the rank of Professor with tenure.
Minimum required level and type of experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities
Preferred Qualifications
Prior experience in academic leadership roles such as Department Chair or Director of Research Centers is preferred.

About the College
About the Department
The department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering is comprised of 25 faculty, about 650 undergraduate students, and 140 graduate students. Current research areas include advanced manufacturing, materials, mechatronics and automation, biomechanics, biomedical engineering, unmanned and space systems, renewable energy, computational fluid dynamics, and thermal-fluid systems. The MAE department houses well-equipped laboratories where faculty and students conduct research on diverse topics ranging from micromechanics and cellular mechanobiology to smart systems, composites, and robotics. The faculty conduct research in collaborations with the NASA , NIA , Thomas Jefferson Lab, Naval Shipyard and Naval Warfare Centers. Active student chapters include ASME , AIAA , SAE , Theta Tau, SWE , NSBE , ASB and SHPE . More information on the department can be found at https://odu.edu/mae.
