We are looking for:

Process Control Engineer to provide on-going support for a DCS controlled mixed mode (batch and continuous) chemical manufacturing operation at the Syensqo Niagara Falls, Canada site. This is an on-site position supporting the Emerson DeltaV and Moore APACS System which includes administration, programming and maintenance. Successful candidates will have experience in interacting with Operations, Maintenance and Engineering teams to utilize control system technologies to improve site operations and process safety. This individual must be familiar with process instruments, control valves, three phase 600V motor control and safety interlock systems to be able to support new installations to upgrade Process Safety or increase the level of Automation at the site.

The Process Controls Engineer is responsible for the design, installation, maintenance and support of the process control logic in the batch chemical manufacturing facility.

Responsibilities include:

  • Create, manage, update engineering documentation for the process automation system including, functional description, control narrative, IO list, interlock list, SIL calculation,etc.

  • Support of installed and further expansions of the Emerson Delta V system

  • Scheduling and managing system maintenance by Contractors

  • Assigning and maintaining documentation around I/O connections and interfaces

  • Maintains necessary system back-ups and documentation

  • Lead on-site programmer for Delta V execution of recipes as per process and operational specifications.

  • Interacts with Maintenance and Operations teams to support troubleshooting of failures indicated in Delta V

  • Able to learn and understand current process executions and propose paths for automation (recipes) and then lead implementation and start-up. This includes development of necessary recipes to support the introduction of new products into the manufacturing equipment

  • Together with Operations Engineers, able to review existing sequential programming (recipes) and modify or improve for optimization of yield / cycle time or reduce nuisance interruptions / program stalling

You will bring:

  • Minimum of 3-5 years of direct experience in industrial Chemical Plant Operations (broad based experience interacting with production, engineering and unionized maintenance and operation personnel)

  • Chemical Plant experience should be in facility operated to world class standards in the areas of Process Safety; Digital Instrumentation & Control; Safety, Health and Environment standards as they pertain to maintenance work and use of contractors

  • Candidates must show knowledge and experience directly in the use of Emerson Delta V process control systems in a batch and/or continuous environment. Also, the design, configuration, testing, start- up, troubleshooting and ongoing maintenance of digital instrumentation systems and safety interlock systems

  • Four year relevant Engineering degree; Chemical or Electrical disciplines preferred and is registered or eligible for registration as a Professional Engineer with Professional Engineers Ontario is a preference

  • A working knowledge of process historian systems is required. Preferred candidates have direct experience in the use of an OSI/PI process historian system

  • Candidates should have a demonstrated ability to work with necessary hardware and software systems to support unit operation and interact with vendors / contractors for full development of the system and ensure proper installation

  • Candidates should also have a demonstrated understanding of the requirements for electrical systems compliant with Section 18 of the Canada Electrical Code (installations in Hazardous Areas) and ISA S88 Batch Process Control Standard

  • The engineer should have knowledge of communication system platforms such as EthernetIP, Devicenet, OPC, OPC UA, ASi and Modbus

  • The engineer must be familiar with three phase AC motors and industrial motor controls including Variable Frequency Drives

  • The engineer must have a demonstrated history in the execution of projects requiring new or replacement control systems, process instrumentation, human machine interfaces, and process data networks

  • The engineer must have strong verbal and technical writing skills to interact with the Operations department to convey changes to the control system and complete the associated management of change and training documents for assigned project work

The following are considered additional assets:

  • Familiarity with Front End Loading (FEL) Project Management

  • Experience in working or managing EPCM teams or Brownfield project execution

  • Familiarity with IT/OT network, security and management

  • Familiarity with databases (SQL), data analytics and scripting in (VBA, python, Java, etc.)

  • Will interact closely with the other members of the Process Control Team, Operations department, the Operations Engineering group, the Site Maintenance Department, the Project Engineering team and the separate Project Team working on a Multi-phase migration of a legacy control system into the Delta V platform
