The Role
Researches, plans, designs and develops mechanical products and systems such as instruments, controls, robots, engines, machines and mechanical, thermal hydraulic or heat transfer systems for production, transmission, measurement, and use of energy. Applies research to the planning, design, development, and testing of mechanical and/or electromechanical systems, instruments, controls, engines, and/or machines.
This position supports the Nuclear Engineering department E86 for the Virginia Class (VCS) project. Specifically, this position is for the VCS Delivery Team which provides hands-on waterfront engineering support and oversight for the construction and testing of nuclear Reactor Plant and non-nuclear Steam Plant machinery and fluid systems. In addition, this team supports all processes involved with final delivery of VCS submarines along with Post-Shakedown Availabilities (PSAs).
A successful candidate will possess analytical/problem solving skills to resolve technical issues which arise during submarine construction. The individual will have a strong working knowledge of Reactor Plant and/or Steam Plant operations and system make-up. The individual shall have the communication/relational skills to interface and discuss technical issues with technical and non-technical personnel as well as government representatives/customers and vendors. In addition, the candidate will be expected to provide technical oversight in the group and also lead cross-functional teams when high level issues arise. This position will also have an emphasis on training development as well as mentoring junior engineers.
Typical duties in this role include the following:
Act as lead engineer for multiple Steam/Reactor Plant systems and major quality/technical issues.
Performing on-site inspections of construction issues that arise during submarine construction in support of resolving Engineering Reports.
Using technical writing skills to develop, review and approve technical work instruction such as SCNIs and SCNPs as well as well as deferral documents such as Work Deferral Requests (WDR) and Deferrals from Specifications (DFS).
Review, interpret and maintain construction drawings for fluid systems and components (arrangement and fabrication).
Review and Interpret Military and Commercial specifications in support of resolving vendor procurement issues.
Aid in development of junior engineers by providing insight on system operations, typical deckplate problem solving and other engineering processes. In addition, aid in the development of new training documents for new engineers.
Support production meetings on behalf of engineering in order to support timely resolutions and provide engineering insight on construction issues.
Must Have
Bachelor's Degree and 9 years of relevant exempt experience;
Master’s Degree and 7 years of relevant professional experience;
Ph.D. and 4 years of experience.
Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.

A comprehensive understanding of reactor plant and/or non-nuclear steam plant fluid systems and components, reactor plant and/or steam plant cleanliness, system test processes in a construction environment and experience with ship construction processes. Awareness of lifting and handling requirements. Experience with the procurement process and vendor liabilities (i.e. VIRs, VQs and QNs). Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required. Ability to lead multi-disciplinary teams of personnel with varying backgrounds and experience levels.
