The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The above hiring range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

Position Summary

The Language Resources Center is a hub for innovation and collaboration focused on ongoing professional development for language faculty at Columbia University. The LRC strives to align language classroom practice with the latest pedagogical approaches, foster intellectual engagement with emerging language issues, and encourage collaboration across the boundaries of departments, disciplines, and schools. The LRC is home to a number of less commonly taught languages and digital resources used to support instruction in all of Columbia's language offerings. The LRC enables the university to increase the number of languages taught, encourage the adoption of innovative language pedagogy, and deepen the opportunities and context for language study available to students.
The Educational Technologist II will report to the Director of Arts & Sciences. The incumbent will manage the development of appropriate and innovative technologies to improve learning. The Educational Technologist II will perform assessments on language faculty pedagogical needs and the use of instructional technology, evaluate the results, and will develop solutions to fix any gaps and enhance teaching.

Responsibilities

  • Develops, leads, and coordinates professional lectures, workshops, working groups, seminars, and similar initiatives to disseminate advances in the fields of information technology to the language faculty.

  • Engages in continuous outreach to the language faculty to assess pedagogical needs, working one-on-one with individual instructors to assist with understanding and applying technological and non-technological solutions to the second language learning process, and develop a community of shared interest among language faculty.

  • Monitors developments in the field of L2 pedagogy, instructional design, and technology to keep up to date on the effective strategies and best practices in the field.

  • Assists faculty with the development of educational objectives on digital elements of courses.

  • Delivers project-management guidance to full-time and part-time language faculty engaging in projects funded by Instructional Innovation Grants.

  • Creates and edits digital video, sound, and images; including designing and deploying virtual environments for language teaching and language exchange.

  • Performs related duties & responsibilities as assigned/required.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree and/or equivalent related experience required.

  • 3 years of related experience.

Additional Position-Specific Qualifications

  • Interest and familiarity with educational theories and have an interest in applying technical expertise to solve educational challenges.

  • Knowledge of classroom technologies including networking, projectors, and other media equipment typically found in networked classrooms.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills. Ability to provide detailed documentation including specifications as well as articles for online and print publications.

  • Training skills - Must deliver high-quality training workshops and courses.

  • Extensive experience using Macs and Windows machines with Web-based technologies in general and Web 2.0 technologies in particular.

  • Proven track record designing multimedia materials for instructional use in a second-language setting preferred.

  • Experience teaching in a second or foreign language or TESOL environment.
