Nexstar Media Group Digital Content Producer (FT) in New York, New York

PIX11 News is looking for a full-time talented, and hard-working digital content producer to write and publish stories on PIX11.com and its social platforms.

The ideal candidate will have a passion for breaking news, with an emphasis on quick, accurate reporting and an eye for compelling headlines that will generate pageviews and help take PIX11.com to the next level as an important source for local news and video.

The right person for this job will be an SEO expert who excels at writing multiple stories per day, enjoys livestreaming events, and has experience with optimizing reporter content.

This role is full-time and onsite. It may include early morning and weekend shifts.

The position's chief responsibilities require that the producer:

  • Be able to work in a fast-paced environment. Digital producers are expected to write multiple stories per day and pivot to breaking news stories as needed.

  • Be proactive in content discovery, identify potential viral social media content, keep abreast of breaking local news, and have a pulse on stories that are important to the PIX11 audience.

  • Be familiar with SEO best practices and website optimization with a demonstrated track record of generating pageviews. The ability to write strong headlines is essential.

  • Be familiar with website analytics and how to use these metrics to inform future editorial decisions, grow our digital audience, and drive pageview traffic. Experience with Google Trends and Chartbeat Heads-Up Display are a plus.

  • Copy edit reporter stories, keeping in mind both grammar and AP style.

  • Write compelling social media copy for Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

  • Create engaging mobile app and desktop pushes using language that drives pageview traffic.

  • Clip and publish video segments from newscasts.

The position’s chief responsibilities require that the producer:

  • Be able to work in a fast-paced environment; break news both quickly and accurately. Producers are expected to write multiple stories daily, and pivot to bigger/breaking stories as needed.

  • Be proactive in content discovery, keep abreast of breaking local news and have a pulse on stories that are important to the PIX11 audience.

  • Use social media and other sources to track development of stories.

  • Copy edit, keeping in mind both grammar and AP style.

  • Post engaging content on social media accounts for breaking news and story promotion (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram), as well as write and send mobile and desktop pushes. Using language that drives traffic while not coming off as “clickbait” is key.

  • Publish video segments from newscasts.

  • Post stories and videos to PIX11.com with an eye toward compelling presentation and best SEO practices. Ability to write strong headlines is essential.

  • Have knowledge of SEO and website optimization with a demonstrated track record of generating page views.

Requirements and skills

  • Minimum of 2-3 years of news reporting or writing experience in a digital space or similar experience in a print or television newsroom.

  • Ability to work professionally with station staff to put out the best possible digital product. Applicants should be able to work independently and as part of a larger team, including fellow digital producers, assignment editors, reporters, and TV producers.

  • Passion for the news, digital presentation, and a commitment to fairness and accuracy.

  • Curiosity about the latest digital tools and a willingness to experiment with new ways to tell stories and reach a wider audience.

  • Knowledge of the following tools is a plus: WordPress, Crowdtangle, Google Trends, and Chartbeat.

At the time of your application, please be prepared to show at least five writing samples published within the last two years.

Hourly rate range: 28-31 USD per hour
