The next Dean and Chief Librarian of the Newman Library at Baruch College will be a bold and visionary leader who will advance the Newman Library as a model for innovative knowledge and information distribution and collection while advancing the College’s vision to be a national model for access and excellence, where ambitions are realized. They will be an effective communicator and advocate of the library and its programs/services to elevate the library as a strategic information nexus for the College and develop external relationships that will benefit the Library and the College. They will lead both short-term and long-term strategic planning activities to create a vision for the future of the library that fully integrates AI, data services, and digital scholarship with existing collections and archives and community engagement. Through the next phase of the library’s evolution, the next dean of the Newman library will be expected to position the library as a central means by which Baruch will achieve its strategic priorities to maximize students’ potential to succeed, promote excellence in research and impactful teaching, strengthen our collaborative and engaged community, and optimize operations and infrastructure.

The Dean and Chief Librarian serves as leader of the library faculty and an active partner with them, collaborates with senior administrators and Deans of other College divisions, serves as liaison for the College’s library with CUNY’s central administration, and interacts with external partners. They are responsible for budgeting, facilities and space planning, and the implementation of technology and its infrastructure. The dean will work closely with the VP of Operations and Administration, Chief Information Officer, and other senior leaders. The Dean and Chief Librarian also participates in the development of cooperative library services within CUNY and beyond.

Reporting to the Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs, the Dean and Chief Librarian must embrace the highest academic and intellectual standards and foster a collaborative and inclusive environment where rigorous research and scholarship take place while maintaining the college's commitment to undergraduate and graduate student and faculty support. They must be innovative, collaborative, and have a record of excellence, impact, and librarianship experience warranting appointment as a full professor (library faculty). They will be a thought leader for both internal and external constituencies on the future of academic libraries. They will assure an inclusive environment for the library users, faculty, and staff and will work both within the library and across the College to make information resources available that will support faculty and students in a rapidly evolving technological environment.

QUALIFICATIONS

This position is in CUNY's Executive Compensation Plan. All executive positions require a minimum of a Bachelor's degree and eight years' related experience.

Candidates must demonstrate a combination of experience and expertise including an ALA-accredited MLS or MLIS degree with an additional master's degree, an established record of professional achievement, and a demonstrated ability to inclusively mentor library faculty. A doctorate in an appropriate discipline is preferred. The successful candidate must have expert knowledge of both traditional library functions, information systems, and emerging technologies, as well as trends in higher education and their impact on library services including the application of artificial intelligence to library services. They will also have a proven track record of effective resource management (i.e. collections, budget, personnel, etc.), development, and experience with library planning.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

Salary range $155,000-$180,000 commensurate with education and experience.
