CAMPUS SPECIFIC INFORMATION

The Department of Anthropology at Hunter College (https://hunter.cuny.edu/artsci/anthropology/) seeks a College Laboratory Technician (CLT) to perform administrative and complex technical functions in Biological Anthropology laboratories in support of research and teaching.

Reporting to the Department Chair, the College Laboratory Technician (CLT) performs administrative, supervisory and/or complex technical functions in biological anthropology laboratories in support of faculty research and teaching in evolutionary biology, nutrition, molecular ecology, paleontology, and human biology.

Teaching-support roles include:

  • Organizing and assisting with supervision of lab personnel, including work-study students and interns

  • Assisting with ensuring research compliance meet appropriate environmental health and safety standards and certifications

  • Maintaining supplies in teaching labs

  • Keeping records of equipment and inventory

Administrative roles include:

  • Processing grant reimbursements

  • Purchasing consumables, software, and equipment for labs

  • Paying invoices & reconciling expenditures

  • Assisting with the management of study participant remuneration

  • Maintaining respectful and professional relationships with all the department faculty, staff, and students.

Research-support roles include:

  • Maintaining BSL-2 lab compliance

  • Maintaining Environmental Health & Safety standards and certification (fire safety, fume hoods, lab safety training)

  • Shipping and receiving sensitive materials including biological samples and frozen materials

  • Tracking sensitive materials and ensuring safe storage

  • Maintaining, calibrating and repairing lab equipment

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

High School Diploma with a minimum of four years' related experience. Additional education may be used to meet the experience requirement: an Associate degree may be substituted for two years experience, and a Bachelor's degree may be substituted for four years experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Bachelors or Masters in Biological Anthropology, Biology, Chemistry, Human Biology, or related STEM discipline;

• Excellent oral and written communication;

• Strong organizational skills with ability to establish plans, manage a large and varied workload of assignments with conflicting priorities, follow up and complete work by set deadlines;

• Detail oriented and accurate with strong numerical analysis, evaluation, and research skills;

• Ability to work productively as an individual contributor and collaboratively as a team member in a time-sensitive role;

• Proficiency using computers and standard office, financial and relational database applications and systems, especially MS Excel, Office 365, Power Point and online general ledger and financial systems.

• Demonstrated multicultural competency and ability to build strong relationships with students from a variety of backgrounds;

• Demonstrated commitment to building and sustaining an inclusive community.

COMPENSATION

Salary commensurate with academic accomplishments and experience($50,655 - $59,378).
