The Trustees of Columbia University in the City of New York Associate Research Scientist in New York, New York

The Department of Neurology seeks an outstanding human electrophysiologist to lead studies of movement recovery using spinal stimulation, under the supervision of Jason Carmel, MD, PhD, a neurologist and movement neuroscientist. We seek to understand how electrical stimulation alters the sensorimotor system in health and in individuals with neurological disease, including cerebral palsy. The project seeks to apply stimulation to improve skilled movement and to reduce spasticity.

Candidates should demonstrate knowledge of human motor function and the neural circuits needed for skilled movement. Experience with EMG, electrical stimulation, robotics, and signal processing are key strengths. In addition, strong analytical skills, critical thinking, and the ability to communicate clearly are important skills. The candidate should have all of the skills to conduct experiments independently. Candidates should demonstrate aptitude and interest in working with research participants and within a team of scientists and clinicians. We also seek individuals with superior motivation, commitment, and attention to detail.

The research is conducted at Columbia University Irving Medical Center, which houses the medical school and biomedical graduate programs. The team includes faculty members from several Departments, including Neurology, Engineering, and Neurosurgery. The position allows participation in a vast array of learning opportunities held at the Medical Center and nearby campuses, including the Zuckerman Institute for Mind, Brain, and Behavior and Och Spine Hospital. The scientific community is rich in ideas and cutting-edge scientific techniques, and the clinical community offers insights into disease and research participants. Compensation is according to experience, and includes access to institutional housing and full benefits. A commitment of at least 2 years of full-time work is required.
