The School of Environmental and Biological Sciences, located on the George H. Cook Campus, is one of the largest schools of Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey. We pursue excellence in research, teaching, and outreach in areas of study that address the biological spectrum from molecules to ecosystems. Our emphasis is on both the fundamental sciences and the social and human dimensions. We offer 21 undergraduate majors, including plant and animal sciences, microbiology, biotechnology, agriculture and food systems, landscape architecture, food and nutritional sciences, ecology and evolution, marine science and oceanography, environmental sciences and meteorology, human ecology, entomology, and environmental economics.
In addition to instruction in the classroom, field, and laboratory, our students have opportunities for experiential learning on and off campus, including a growing emphasis on international experiences through short- and long-term study abroad. Students also have access to a robust program of applied research and outreach hosted by the New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station laboratories, farms, business incubators, and marine stations throughout the state.
Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Seasonal Landscaper for the School of Biological and Environmental Sciences.Among the key duties of the position are the following:
  • Completes tasks necessary to the installation and maintenance of annual and perennial display garden areas, plant collections, and natural areas at Rutgers Gardens.
  • Routine tasks include mowing, trimming, plant and vine removal, pruning, planting, weeding, watering, mulching, composting, and similar duties.
  • Conducts planting and maintenance of trees at Rutgers Gardens through the NJ Trees for Schools project.
  • Scouts and reports plant pest, disease, and deer damage to their supervisor.
  • Completes basic projects related to garden expansion and infrastructure improvements.
  • Assists with the sale of plant and garden products.
  • Completes tasks related to event setup and cleanup.
  • Conducts site clean-up activities, and assisting with other related service, grounds, and maintenance duties as needed.
  • Opens and closes Rutgers Gardens to manage safe public access, including during evenings and weekends.
  • Work will include tasks in both outdoor and greenhouse spaces.
  • May also be asked to assist with training and leading activities of student workers, interns, and/or volunteers at Rutgers Gardens.

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience
  • High school/vocational school education or equivalent experience.
  • A minimum of 2 years of hands-on experience working in the horticulture, agriculture, or landscape trade.
Certifications/Licenses
  • A valid driver's license is required and two years driving experience.

Preferred Qualifications
  • A Bachelor's Degree in horticulture, natural resources, ecology, or a related field, or equivalent technical training, is preferred.
  • Experience operating basic equipment (mower, string trimmer, rototiller, etc.) is strongly preferred.
  • Experience working with students/in a university setting and/or in a public garden is preferred.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Must be reliable with a strong work ethic and attention to detail.
  • Must understand and prioritize safe working conditions for self and others.
  • Must be willing to work outdoors in various weather conditions, both independently and as part of a team.
Equipment Utilized
  • Mowers, String trimmers, Wood chipper, Tractor, Dump truck, Farm and Harvest equipment.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Will be required to work some evenings and weekends according to scheduled programs offered at, and public access to, Rutgers Gardens.
Special Conditions
  • Must be available to regularly work evenings and weekends as scheduled.
