Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Laboratory Technician for the Department of Molecular Biology and Biochemistry within the School of Arts and Sciences. This laboratory technician position is to support C. elegans molecular genetics research on the molecular mechanisms underlying endocytosis and endocytic recycling.Among the key duties of this position are the following:
  • Provides routine technical support relative to scientific research work or projects of a laboratory and/or teaching program.
  • Performs standard and repetitive molecular biology protocols including molecular cloning following established methods.
  • Performs C.elegans strain construction via microinjection, standard genetic crosses and transgenic methods.
  • Keeps the lab clean and organized and performing related duties as needed.
  • Collects and completes basic preparation of samples and specimens.
  • Performs standard and repetitive physical, chemical, and biological tests on materials, substances, and/or living subjects.
  • Prepares media, substances, solutions, and reagents and performs related duties as required.

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience
  • A high school/vocational school education or equivalent with coursework completed in the relevant science area(s).
  • One year of research study experience.
  • An equivalent amount of college-level study in an appropriate science curriculum may be substituted for the experience.
Certifications/Licenses
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Practical understanding and a working knowledge of basic scientific techniques.
  • Ability to record and maintain data in computerized and non-computerized formats.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively.
  • Will be required to participate in required occupational health and safety programs.
  • May require a valid driver's license, two years driving experience, and successful completion of the Rutgers' Defensive Driving Course.
Preferred Qualifications
  • B.A. or B.S. in molecular biology, biochemistry, or related fields.

Equipment Utilized
  • Laboratory equipment used will include microscopes, centrifuges, gel electrophoresis equipment, PCR thermocyclers, and advanced microscopes.
  • Software used will included imaging and statistical software, Microsoft Office Suite, as well as Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
  • Will be required to participate in required occupational health and safety programs.
  • Will be required to work in an animal facility on a routine basis.
  • Procedures may occasionally run many hours in succession, without pause or with only short breaks.
  • Will require the ability to lift and move up to 30 pounds.
  • Regular workweek may include evening and/or weekend work.
Special Conditions
  • Knowledge of microscopy, molecular cloning methods including Gibson Assembly and Gateway technology.
  • Understanding of C.elegans Hermaphrodite genetics.
