Job Overview:

Plans, organizes, supports, and controls all service line activities involved in the effective, efficient, and economical utilization of material resources of the delegated service line, ensuring patient service is continuous and high quality. Supports the Service Line Manager for orientation, training, and development of service line personnel. Relates effectively with perioperative team members for continuity of care; maintains satisfactory relations with other departments and nursing units. Promotes increased case volume through provision of a highly effective service line intra-operative program, efficiency, and development of positive relations of Surgeons within responsible area.

Qualifications:

Education

Must be a Certified Surgical Technician/graduate from an accredited program

Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) certification required

High School Diploma or equivalent required

Membership and participation in professional nursing and community organizations preferred

Five years OR experience required

Essential Functions:

Collaborates with Service Line Manager to ensure all instruments/trays and equipment for all cases are available.

Serves as liaison to surgeons in service line specialty

Reviews schedule one day in advance to ensure appropriate OR suite.

Development and upkeep of preference cards

Maintains control of specialty equipment and supplies

Identifies and coordinates the needs of service line physicians through scheduled meetings in collaboration with the Service Line Manager.

Patient Care Management

Maintains clinical expertise as demonstrated by: Providing care that is safe, effective and consistent of RWJUH standards

Applying knowledge of growth and development over the life span

Applying the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of patients service on Service Line

Sharing specialty based knowledge and skills both formally and informally

Incorporating current research findings into clinical practice

Provides open lines of communication for reporting medical errors and near misses using RWJUH organizational tools and resources

Human Resources/Financial Management

Assists the Unit Educator and Service Line Manager in facilitating orientation process for new employees demonstrated by:

Assists in maintaining a positive preceptor/orientee relationship

Working with the preceptor/orientee to solve any problems

Supports the Service Line Manager in controlling service line expenditures within agreed budgets

Demonstrates excellent interpersonal and communication skills acting as a professional leadership role model

Research, Education and Performance Improvement:

Identifies and coordinates with Service Line Manager on educational needs of service line team members through scheduled in-services

Attends regular meetings with Service Line Manager and service line team members

Participates in hospital safety programs

Supports and enforces infection-control policies and procedures.
