Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking an Accounting Specialist for the Research Financial Services Department. As part of the Office for Research, the Accounting Specialist is detailed-oriented and organized with strong analytical skills. The position requires a skilled and thorough researcher with excellent communication and record-keeping skills.Among the key duties of this position are the following:
  • Receives, processes, and applies funds to sponsored projects within RFS.
  • Processes and posts receipts for sponsored projects.
  • Creates refunds via the FMS (financial management system).
  • Generates accounts receivable reports for analysis.
  • Assists with obtaining documentation for bad debts write-offs.
  • Collaborates with service partners for bank reconciliations.
  • Investigates and resolves any A/R irregularities.
  • Liaison to Rutgers University Foundation for RFS.
  • Researches invoices and payment receipts to resolve discrepancies.
  • Assists in obtaining documentation for audit requests and compliance.

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in finance, accounting, or a related field.
  • A minimum of two years' accounts receivable experience in a similar role, or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
Certifications/Licenses
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Excellent communication, research, problem-solving, and time-management skills.
  • Strong math and computer skills.
  • Proficiency with MS Office applications and web conferencing applications (e.g., Zoom, WebEx, MS Teams).
  • Working knowledge of database and spreadsheet software in Excel
  • Ability to work with university information systems e.g., Oracle Cloud, Tableau
  • High level of accuracy, efficiency, and accountability
  • Attention to detail, ability to multitask and strong analytical skills required.
  • Ability to effectively interact with all levels of employees and management.
  • Ability to build relationships with internal and external clients.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge of Rutgers University systems, policies and procedures.
Equipment Utilized
  • Personal computer and related equipment (various teleconferencing software applications, headset, monitor, keyboard, etc.), standard office equipment, including but not limited to telephone, printer; copier; FAX; typewriter; desk; files; storage cabinets; calculator.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
  • Sitting for extended periods; prolonged exposure to computer monitors.
  • Must operate various input/output devices including keyboard and computer "mouse".
