Summary

Collaborates with Hospitalist Team Leadership to develop strategies to improve patient care, optimize length of stay opportunities, improve patient experience and above all improve quality of care. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to; developing high-level relationships with physicians, staff and organizational leadership to promote effective clinical and operational outcomes; functions as the primary liaison to financial services.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Supports and promotes the mission and values of Covenant Health Ministry.

  • Collaborates with the Vice President for Patient Care Services in planning, evaluating and developing nursing activities on an ongoing basis to ensure patient care needs will be met.

  • Ensures evidence-based standards are maintained as well as compliance with all licensing and accreditation requirements.

  • Oversees and is responsible for the day-to-day operations of assigned departments, ensuring that all policies and procedures are followed, staff are proficient, and patient safety and quality are always maintained.

  • Effectively blends leadership and management skills with clinical expertise in ensuring staff provide patient/family-centered care according to established standards.

  • Supports and encourages shared governance models at the unit level.

  • Demonstrates a positive and engaging attitude in all interactions, and is receptive to other viewpoints, committed to the success of all.

  • Completes work on time, meeting deadlines, with accuracy and precision.

  • Is responsible for strategic planning, new program development, and enhancement of existing services.

  • Works collaboratively with physicians and other colleagues and staff to ensure the delivery of high-quality patient care and achieve desired outcomes.

  • Partners with medical staff and promotes service line growth.

  • Responsible for the oversight of quality and clinical outcomes measurement and seeks to achieve organizational targets.

  • Develops and manages capital and operating budgets.

  • Actively involved in Value Analysis and identifying cost-saving measures.

  • Provides direction for the efficient and effective utilization of resources in all areas of responsibility.

  • Ensures Professional Nursing Practice follows the ANA Code of Ethics and adheres to the ANA Scope and Standards for Nurse Administrators.

  • Manages barriers which may influence efficient operations.

  • Defines standards of care and ensures consistent compliance with policies.

  • Champions standardization, optimization and best practices in the various areas of responsibility.

  • Promotes an environment of safety and cohesiveness.

  • Fosters growth of leaders within the depts of responsibility through mentoring and succession planning.

  • Ensures direct reports coordinate and monitor daily staffing patterns for current census based on acuity and patient care needs.

  • Assumes Fiscal Accountability for departments of responsibility, including the development and monitoring of unit level budgets, productivity and FTE variances, achieving department-based approved budget.

  • Collaborates with clinical nurse managers and clinical nurse educators to assess the educational needs of staff annually with a developed plan for meeting identified needs.

  • Monitors educational needs on an ongoing basis to ensure best outcomes for our patients.

  • Interviews, hires, counsels, evaluates performance and/or disciplines for nursing leadership team.

  • Establishes clear expectations for staff, keeps them informed through regular communication and holds staff accountable, following a Just Culture Model.

  • Accountable to nursing leadership that patient and staff rounding occur on a regular basis.

  • Monitors patient satisfaction and develops strategies for improvement.

  • Takes a proactive approach to influence employee engagement in a positive manner and designs action plans as needed.

  • Accountable for efficient use of all resources: personnel, material, financial, including capital equipment acquisitions.

  • Monitors quality of care through data review, observation, patient, physician and staff in-put and promotes a culture of safety in the patient care environment. Is accountable for outcome measurement through performance improvement activities.

  • Takes initiative and works collaboratively with others to problem- solve and to achieve desired outcomes, including peers and providers.

  • Follows through with high-risk patient care issues in a timely manner and develops action plans for improvement.

  • Participates in professional organizations as appropriate. Maintains proficiency and participates in educational activities for continued professional growth.

  • Promotes and participates in community activities to facilitate public awareness of hospital services.

  • Collaborates with all departments, internally and externally, as well as physician offices and other institutions, to promote an integrated healthcare delivery system.

  • Serves on hospital and nursing committees as designated and is comfortable leading team discussion on initiatives to drive change utilizing data.

  • Performs in the role of Administrator on Call within leadership rotation.

  • Willing to perform other duties as assigned and able to adjust and adapt to changes within the workplace quickly and positively.

  • Other duties as consistent with this role.

    Job Requirements

    Job Knowledge and Skills

  • Minimum of five years of director-level clinical leadership experience, with a proven track record of progressive leadership and expertise in both clinical operations and nursing administration required.

    Education and Experience

  • Registered Nurse Graduate of an approved clinical Nursing Program

  • Current NH License Required

  • MSN Preferred

  • BSN Required

  • BLS – Required

  • ACLS – Preferred and required within 6 months of hire.

  • Membership in a Professional Nursing Organization preferred.

  • Certification in clinical specialty or administration preferred.
