General Job Description

This is a professional position responsible for providing individual and group/team nutrition counseling and education to enhance the performance of student-athletes on-site and during travel. Responsible for counseling individuals and groups on daily nutrition for performance and health; translating the latest scientific evidence into practical sports nutrition recommendations; tracking and documenting outcomes of nutrition services; serving as a food and nutrition resource for coaches, trainers, and parents; providing sports nutrition education for student-athletes and teams; and maintaining professional competency and skills required for professional practice. Works under general supervision, with moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. Reports to the Sports Performance Director.

Essential Job Functions

  1. Provides individual counseling to student-athletes regarding their performance fueling and nutritional needs, meal plans, and personal nutrition goals.

  2. Provides diet and nutrition education regarding various topics and concerns, including hydration, food selection for type of training, meal planning, health effects, and recovery from illness/injury.

  3. Addresses nutritional challenges to performance such as food allergies, bone mineral disturbances, gastrointestinal disturbances, iron depletion, and iron deficiency anemia.

  4. Assesses and analyzes dietary practices, body composition, and energy balance (intake and expenditure) of student-athletes in the context of performance and health.

  5. Creates, updates, and maintains educational materials related to sports nutrition and dieting, including presentations, informational flyers, and handouts.

  6. Presents educational materials related to sports nutrition to various intercollegiate athletic teams and groups.

  7. Coordinates with campus dining staff on nutritious and healthy food options for student-athletes.

  8. Manages fueling station(s) and distribution of nutritional supplements.

  9. Educates student-athletes in food selection and food preparation.

  10. Counsels student-athletes on achieving and maintaining a level of body mass, body fat, and muscle mass that is consistent with good health and good performance.

  11. Recommends team fueling plans to promote optimal nutrition during times of travel for away games or other events.

  12. Coordinates with all athletics staff to promote optimal health for student-athletes.

  13. Provides appropriate support as member of task force for eating disorders and disordered eating.

  14. Stays informed of current food, nutrition, and health issues and research related to sports nutrition.

  15. Maintains dietetics certification and continuing education requirements.

  16. Develops and implements an individualized plan for professional growth and development including participation in professional organizations and activities, workshops, seminars, and development programs.

    Non-Essential Job Functions

  17. Adheres to all applicable National Collegiate Athletic Association ( NCAA ), conference and university rules and regulations.

  18. Attends university, conference, NCAA , and other organizational meetings as assigned.

  19. Participates on university committees and task forces as assigned.

  20. Performs other related duties as assigned.

    Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

The individual must possess the following knowledge, skills and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that the individual can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation.

  1. Knowledge of, or the ability to learn, university policies and procedures.

  2. Knowledge of, or ability to learn, policies, procedures, and guidelines established by the conference and the NCAA .

  3. Knowledge of rules and regulations of national and international athletic governing bodies regarding banned drugs and restricted substances.

  4. Knowledge of best practices and procedures in food and nutrition science and services.

  5. Skill in using computer applications including spreadsheet, database, and word processing software.

  6. Skill in public speaking and delivering presentations to individuals and groups.

  7. Ability to develop objectives, evaluate effectiveness, and assess needs.

  8. Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form.

  9. Ability to establish and maintain a good rapport with university faculty and staff, students, and the general public.

  10. Ability to provide support for student development with a demonstrable concern for students.

  11. Ability to accurately prepare and maintain records, files, reports, and educational materials.

  12. Ability to learn office and university-specific software.

  13. Ability to comply with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 ( HIPAA ).

  14. Ability to maintain currency of knowledge and skills in area of responsibility.

  15. Ability to obtain and maintain certification in area of responsibility.

    Physical Demands

    Required Education

Bachelor’s degree in nutrition, food science, dietetics or a related field is required.

Required Experience and Training

Two years of related experience is required. Experience in counseling, educating or teaching nutrition practices is required. Certification as a Registered Dietitian (RD) or ability to obtain certification is required. Additional education may substitute for experience on a basis set forth by the Department of Human Resources.

Preferred Qualifications

Master’s degree is preferred. Experience working in a collegiate or professional athletic setting is preferred. Board certification in sports dietetics ( CSSD ) is preferred.

Benefit and Retirement Eligibility

This position is eligible for participation in the Teacher Retirement System of Texas ( TRS ) retirement plan, subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
