General Job Description

This is a supervisory position responsible for supporting the daily operations of the Walter Todd Research Center. Responsible for contributing to the care and maintenance of all animals on site; assisting with and performing routine service and maintenance; helping with assignment of student schedules and tasks; and facilitating departmental activities, events, research, and student organizations. Assists in managing the center to achieve the mission of increasing research and providing experiential learning and employment opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students. Works under general supervision, with moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. Reports to the Farm Manager.

Essential Job Functions

  1. Helps with and supervises daily feeding and caretaking of university-owned animals.

  2. Assists with maintenance and preventative maintenance of research center facilities and equipment.

  3. Assists with oversight of the daily operations of the research center.

  4. Works with faculty, staff, and graduate students to prepare for labs, activities, and student organization events as well as community events.

  5. Assists faculty, staff, and graduate students with carrying out research projects and appropriate protocols along with teaching and service.

  6. Assists the farm manager in establishing and updating standard operating procedures.

  7. Participates in hiring and training assigned graduate students and student employees.

  8. Assists the farm manager with scheduling student employees for work.

  9. Assists in oversight of projects assigned to graduate students and student employees.

  10. Contributes to promotion and advertising of university-owned animals.

  11. Enforces all safety policies and procedures.

  12. Assists with tours of the research center.

  13. Contributes to forage production and management for the research center.

  14. Acts as the farm manager in their absence.

  15. Receives and supervises the receipt of payments from students and others for departmentally sponsored activities.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

The individual must possess the following knowledge, skills, and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that the individual can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation.

  1. Knowledge of, or the ability to learn, university policies and procedures.

  2. Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws, statutes, regulations, codes, and standards related to the area of responsibility.

  3. Knowledge of practices and procedures in animal husbandry, caretaking, feeding, and breeding.

  4. Knowledge of practices and procedures in forage production and harvesting.

  5. Knowledge of the repair, maintenance, and operation of buildings and equipment.

  6. Skill in using computer applications including spreadsheet, database, and word processing software.

  7. Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form.

  8. Ability to effectively market the programs and services of the department.

  9. Ability to analyze, organize, and prioritize work while meeting multiple deadlines.

  10. Ability to establish and maintain a good rapport with university faculty and staff, students, and the general public.

  11. Ability to plan, assign, and supervise the work of others.

  12. Ability to train and supervise others.

  13. Ability to be on call and respond to emergency situations.

  14. Ability to obtain and maintain a Texas driver’s license.

  15. Physical condition adequate to permit full performance of duties.

    Physical Demands

Physical ability to perform essential job functions, including ability to stand up for more than an hour at a time, stoop, kneel, crouch, bend, crawl, climb, balance, reach with hands and arms, use hands to finger/handle/feel, talk, hear, lift and push up to 50 pounds as well as close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus. The typical noise level in the work environment is loud and the employee is exposed to extreme environmental conditions (work outdoors year-round and in confined facilities such as poultry houses and swine housing).

Required Education

Bachelor’s degree in agriculture or a related field is required. Related experience may be substituted for required education on a basis set forth by the Department of Human Resources.

Required Experience and Training

Two years of related experience is required. Knowledge of agriculture production systems is required. Valid Texas driver’s license is required at time of employment.

Preferred Qualifications

Thorough knowledge of beef, poultry, equine or swine production systems is preferred. Experience with preventative maintenance on equipment and facilities is preferred. Supervisory experience is preferred. Education or training in segments of reproduction of species or nutrition is preferred.

This position is eligible for participation in the Teacher Retirement System of Texas ( TRS ) retirement plan, subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
