We are looking for a dynamic Director of Engineering to join our team at the JW Marriott The Rosseau

Muskoka Resort & Spa. This is a critical role within our resort and reports to the Hotel Manager. The

Director of Engineering is responsible for the leadership and supervision of the maintenance and

engineering teams to maintain the resort in accordance with the JW Marriott standards. The key to our

success is Guest Satisfaction.

The Director of Engineering has overall responsibility for leading the maintenance and engineering

teams to maintain the resort, spa, pools, grounds, water & sewage treatment facilities, and physical

plant with particular attention towards safety, security and asset protection. They are accountable for

managing the budget, capital expenditure projects, preventative maintenance and energy conservation

programs. They will maintain standards and regulatory requirements related to the building operations

and will lead the emergency response team for all facility issues. This individual must be resourceful and

an expert at troubleshooting as our resort is in a remote location and requires timely maintenance and

repair if emergencies arise.

JOB SUMMARY

TECHNICAL AND PRIMARY ACCOUNTABILITIES

• Oversees the effective operation of the resort water & sewage treatment plants, and generator, all

capable of servicing the entire resort property.

• Manage and troubleshoot problems with HVAC, mechanical, refrigeration, plumbing, water,

electrical systems and lighting using the Building Automated System. Recommend and implement

appropriate solutions.

• Maintain the physical appearance and operational efficiency of the hotel including physical,

mechanical, electrical and plumbing.

• Ensure property, grounds, physical plant and work areas are maintained to standard and that all

safety equipment and conditions are to code.

• Lead the maintenance of the computer aided maintenance system, entering and modifying

equipment data including reviewing and recommending changes to the operating systems,

scheduled maintenance, tasks, data and procedures.

• Ensure departmental productivity, training, staff issues and communications are implemented

properly and to expected standards, organizational policy and applicable bylaws. This includes staff

operating records and logbooks are up to date.

• Monitor, direct and review staff and contractor scope on projects and ensure they are completed on

time and within acceptable budget and standards.

• Manage Capital Expenditures and be accountable for these to the Hotel Manager, Managing

Director and Ownership.

• Enter and maintain various data on the facility, including equipment records and utility

consumption, while providing various statistical and efficiency reports and presentations on the departments purchasing, inventory stock and labour by entering and modifying records.

• To maintain department organization through efficient maintenance and associate scheduling and

ensuring up to date records by timely adjustment, submission and forwarding of payroll, benefits,

attendance, approved vacation requests, and maintenance of Associate records.

Direct all emergency programs including; fire, life and safety and all other ministry regulations and

ensure fire crew has complete understanding of all procedures, equipment and alarms.

• Manage energy conservation programs for the property to minimise expenses while managing and

controlling heat, light and power.

• Develop an engineering operating strategy that is aligned with the property/brand’s business

strategy including both short- and long-term planning and day-to-day operations.

• Review financial reports and statements to determine how Engineering is performing and to ensure

budget is maintained.

• Oversee execution of long-term preventative maintenance and 10-year asset protection plans.

• Address potential areas of concern and propose solutions to management and ownership in a

proactive manner.

• Communicate a clear and consistent message regarding departmental goals to produce desired

results.

• Manage resort construction and renovation projects to ensure timely completion of projects within

budgetary guidelines.

• Manages a team of 20 + in high season, including 3 Managers.

• Acts as a member of the Executive committee of the resort.

SECONDARY REQUIREMENTS

• Works with Human Resources to select qualified candidates in all department roles.

• Oversees the Rooms Preventive Maintenance Plan with an inventory rotation 3 times per year.

• Oversees the coordination, distribution, and review daily service and weekly preventive

maintenance work orders and maintenance record logs, time sheets, labour and material charges.

• Research service and material suppliers and recommends through comparison analysis and

efficiencies on new and or existing vendor/suppliers to provide and maintain material, parts

inventories and services for the engineering department.

• Oversee issuing of purchase orders, placing orders, receiving deliverables, including maintenance

and reconciliation of the accounts, reports, files and records.

• Manage all Marriott specific applications related to engineering and complete “land it tasks

projects”.

• Ensure prompt and professional response to guest's maintenance needs ensuring courteous service

to hotel standards.

• Attend all Facility Management/Property meetings as required, passing on necessary information to

the maintenance team in regular staff meetings.

• Dispatch, assign and direct associates engaged in building operations, inspections, routine and nonroutine repairs and preventive maintenance on boilers, life safety, electrical and mechanical

distribution systems to ensure customer satisfaction to client service requests.

• Assess Engineering team performance to ensure team follows best practices and follows the JW Marriott standards.

• Handle guest concerns, compliments and suggestions in a professional manner. Respond to the

Hotel Manager regarding Guest surveys.

• Follow all company and job-specific safety policies, and reports any accident and/or hazard

immediately.

• Responsible for the cleanliness and safety aspects of all plant and mechanical equipment rooms.

Undertake special projects and other duties as assigned by the Hotel Manager, Managing Director

and Ownership.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

• 10+ years' experience in the engineering and maintenance or related professional area; technical

training in HVAC-R/Electrical/Plumbing OR

• Post secondary education from an accredited university in Building and Construction, Engineering,

Mechanics, or related major and

• Technical training in HVAC-R/Electrical/Plumbing.

• Previous experience managing remote property and managing sewage, propane and generator

plants is an asset.

• Previous engineering experience working on a cruise ship, or remote locations considered an asset.

WORKING CONDITIONS

• Must be able to work flexible hours including evenings, weekends and holidays as needed.

• Stand, sit or walk for an extended period or for an entire shift.

• Reach overhead and below the knees, including bending, twisting and pulling

Exempt annual salary $100,000 – $115,000 CDN
