Overview

Fairview is looking for a Nursing Station Technician to join our new Observation Unit at our University of MN Medical Center in Minneapolis, MN.

Position Details:

  • Location: University of MN Medical Center, Minneapolis, MN

  • Unit: Observation Unit

  • FTE: 0.6

  • Shift: Day shift (7:00 AM - 7:30 PM)

  • Weekend Requirement: Every third weekend

Responsibilities Job Description

Job Summary:

The NST is responsible for assisting the professional caregiver in the delivery of patient care, transporting patient and / or equipment, setting up and maintaining patient rooms, reordering and stocking supplies. Performs a wide range of clerical, transcription, and maintenance of patient care unit desk area functions. Coordinates the flow of communication on a patient care unit. The NST does not work autonomously but under the direction of the professional nurse. They may or may not be given a patient care assignment based on unit needs and the discretion of the manager / charge nurse

Job Expectations:

  • Assistance in Patient Care: Supports professional caregivers in delivering patient care, which includes assisting with personal grooming, bathing, toileting, feeding, and monitoring patient conditions.

  • Transport: Responsible for transporting patients, equipment, specimens, and supplies as needed.

  • Room and Equipment Management: Sets up, cleans, and maintains patient rooms and equipment, ensuring they are ready for use.

Communication and Coordination:

  • Facilitation: Ensures timely communication flow on the patient care unit to promote coordination of services.

  • Telephone and Intercom: Promptly answers telephone and patient intercom, identifying self and patient care area, and relays messages and patient requests in a timely and courteous manner.

  • Customer Service: Provides effective customer service by interacting with healthcare team members, patients, and the public to ensure friendly and cooperative communication.

Scheduling and Documentation:

  • Test and Procedure Coordination: Schedules tests, lab work, and other procedures, arranging appropriate transport.

  • Electronic Health Records (EHR): Effectively uses EHR to document and manage patient information.

  • Clerical Duties: Completes clerical duties, such as assembling and maintaining patient charts, transcribing physician’s orders, and preparing charts for discharge and transfers.

Patient Care and Safety:

  • Basic Care: Provides basic patient care, including personal grooming, bathing, toileting, feeding, skin care, oral hygiene, and specimen collection/testing.

  • Monitoring: Assists nurses in monitoring patient conditions and accurately records data such as weights, input/output, vital signs, and blood glucose levels.

  • Patient Privacy and Safety: Ensures patient privacy and safety at all times, reporting unusual findings to the RN promptly.

Supplies and Equipment:

  • Supply Management: Orders and stocks individual patient supplies as directed and notifies appropriate departments for equipment maintenance.

  • Cost Control: Demonstrates awareness of cost containment and control standards.

Orientation and Training:

  • New Staff Orientation: Participates in orienting new staff, including nursing staff, physicians, and students, to the patient care unit.

  • Knowledge Sharing: Demonstrates and shares knowledge of priority-based job responsibilities, hospital policies, and procedures, including patient confidentiality, safety/emergency procedures, and infection control.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Room and Equipment Maintenance: Cleans, sets up, and maintains patient rooms and equipment.

  • Documentation: Completes documentation of tasks and patient care per standards.

  • Orientation and Skills Evaluation: Completes the orientation process and skills evaluation checklist objectively and in a timely manner.

Qualifications

Required:

Experience:

  • One of the following:

  • Successful completion of Fairview’s OnTrack Nursing Assistant training program or another Fairview-sponsored Nursing Assistant program.

  • Six months of recent direct care experience in a long-term, home care, or acute care setting. Appropriate roles may include Nursing Assistant, PCA (Personal Care Assistant), Resident Assistant, or Emergency Room Technician.

  • Current enrollment in an LPN (Licensed Practical Nurse), RN (Registered Nurse), or Nurse Practitioner program, with the completion of one semester of clinical rotation within the program.

  • Current certification on the Minnesota Nursing Assistant Registry upon hire. This requirement does not need to be maintained throughout employment and is not required if subsequently transferring into another Nursing Assistant, Nursing Station Tech, or Nursing Station Attendant position.

License/Certification/Registration:

  • Basic Life Support (BLS for Healthcare Providers) certification required.

  • OnTrack participants must be able to obtain Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers certification upon completion of the OnTrack program.

This role is suitable for individuals who have completed relevant training programs, have direct care experience, or are currently enrolled in nursing programs, with the necessary certifications to support their work in patient care and unit operations.
