Responsible for implementing and executing the Safety, Health, and Environmental (SH&E) plan and providing strategic direction for SH&E in the Rail and Terminals, West Unit.

    What You’ll Be Doing:

  • Lead a team of SH&E professionals in the Rail and Terminals, West Unit, while supporting the needs of individual operations as needed.

  • Work closely with all operations managers and their safety teams in implementing all safety-related portions of Savage’s S7 System.

  • Development and delivery of procedural and regulatory training.

  • Lead Business Unit operations in the prevention of injuries and losses.

  • Establish a proactive SH&E process toward incident prevention.

  • Ensure all work is performed in compliance with regulatory requirements.

  • Work with onsite Safety Specialists and Lead Safety Specialists to be an extension of SH&E and ensure team members follow proper safety rules and processes, and utilize the tools to prevent incidents.

  • Work with other SH&E professionals within the Unit and Group to collaborate, align on strategy, and execute timely, while always keeping in mind the need for “continuous improvement”.

  • Implement and conduct training to ensure all Team Members are properly trained to perform their work safely.

  • Participate in various SH&E-related councils and committees within Savage and have a strong presence on the Customer’s contractor safety council, attending meetings and completing field audits on a weekly/monthly basis.

  • Ensure regulatory (EPA and OSHA) compliance; ensure all permits and reports are properly completed and submitted.

  • Interface with key customer SH&E contacts and assist operations in implementing and executing customer-driven programs or emphasis areas (including involvement with each Plant’s Contractor Safety Team activities).

  • Lead post-incident investigations and work with managers to develop effective, sustainable corrective actions to eliminate repeat incidents.

  • Monitor and trend safety statistics in the operation and advise and implement corrective actions that lead to zero injuries and damage events.

  • Knowledgeable and proficient with regulatory (PSM, FRA, OSHA, DOT, MSHA) compliance requirements.

  • Ensure incidents are properly reported to internal and external parties.

  • Assists in the start-up of new businesses, products, and processes.

  • Lead Savage team on customer safety audits.

  • Provide strategic coaching and mentoring for direct reports.

  • Track leading indicators to address trends within the unit.

  • Responsible for growth, development, and continuing education and certification of SH&E Supervisors and Managers (building bench strength).

    What You Need to Be Successful:

  • In-depth knowledge in the transportation and storage of hazardous chemicals; with emphasis on rail and transloading.

  • Basic understanding of DOT and FRA rules and requirements.

  • Proven ability to analyze situations and data to make sound decisions.

  • Experience delivering training preferred

  • Computer skills (MS Office Suite)

  • Excellent communication skills: written and spoken; excellent organizational skills & multi-tasking

    Preferred Education/Experience:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Safety or a related field

  • 8+ years’ experience in a safety leadership role

  • 8+ years’ experience working in an industrial setting

  • Hold a safety certification recognized by an accredited organization (CSP, SMS, CHMM, OHST, or CET).

  • Transloading/HAZMAT DOT/Industrial Rail experience preferred

    Physical Requirements:

  • 50% Travel / 50% Office (Cubicle)

  • Commitment to working safely at all times

  • Ability to be exposed to the outdoor elements

  • Physically fit to work with the team members at the operation and train them in their jobs and assignments

  • Climb on and off railcars and locomotives safely

  • Operate railcar hand brakes

  • Operate rail switches

  • Walk long distances

  • Consistently bend, stoop, kneel, and climb on elevated surfaces

  • Work, walk, and stand on uneven ballast surfaces for long periods

  • Lift to 50 lbs consistently throughout a shift

  • Operate basic hand tools

  • Wear required PPE

  • Willing to work different shifts and weekends as needed

  • Ability to work/cover weekend duty periodically
