Role Headline

Senior System Engineer is responsible for the design, development, and implementation of customer projects, according to defined Siemens and customer requirements. This role requires a deep understanding of power system protection principles, relay settings, coordination studies, and fault analysis. The Senior System Engineer collaborates closely with design engineers, project managers, and field technicians to ensure the reliability and safety of power distribution systems. Additionally, effective communication, problem-solving, and teamwork skills are essential for success in this role.

Responsibilities of the Role

· Substation Protection scheme design – interpreting and translating customer requirements into a complete system as well as applying innovative approaches i.t.o products, technology and people.

· Design protection schemes for electrical substations, transmission lines, and distribution networks. This includes specifying relay types, coordination settings, and communication protocols such as IEC61850.

· Develop relay settings for various protection devices such as overcurrent relays, distance relays, differential relays, and transformer protection relays. Ensure coordination between different protection elements to minimize system downtime during faults.

· Perform fault analysis studies to identify potential system vulnerabilities and recommend corrective actions. Utilize simulation software to model power system behavior under different fault conditions.

· Implementing projects within time, cost and quality parameters.

· Conduct coordination studies to optimize protection settings and ensure selective tripping of protection devices. Coordinate with neighboring utilities to maintain system stability during transient and permanent faults.

· Oversee the commissioning and testing of protection systems during new installations or system upgrades. Develop testing procedures and perform acceptance testing to validate protection relay performance.

· Documentation and Standards Compliance: Prepare technical documentation including protection relay settings, coordination studies, and equipment specifications. Ensure compliance with industry standards and regulatory requirements such as SABS and IEC.

· Troubleshooting and Maintenance: Provide technical support for troubleshooting protection system issues and resolving relay misoperations.

· Provide training and mentorship to junior engineers and technicians on protection system principles, relay coordination techniques, and best practices.

· Providing customer support: the system engineer is required to perform post-fault investigations as required by the customer.

  • Proactively identify, review, and manage project technical risks and ensures that appropriate mitigation measures are in place.

· Support business development by Identifying business opportunities and market potential in the Utility, Infrastructure, Industry and other market verticals.

  • Lead or participate in project management activities related to protection system design and implementation. This may include developing project schedules, managing budgets, coordinating with contractors and vendors, and ensuring that project milestones are achieved within specified timelines. The Senior Protection Engineer may also act as a liaison between the engineering team and clients or stakeholders, providing regular project updates and addressing any concerns or changes in project scope. Strong project management skills can enhance the overall effectiveness of the engineering team and ensure successful project delivery.

Qualifications and Experience

· Bsc or BTech in Electrical engineering

· 5 to 7 Years of relevent experience in substation protection.

· Possesses and applies a broad knowledge of principles, practices, and procedures of power system protection.

· Registered as Professional Engineer or Professional Technologist with ECSA.

· Proficiency in protection relay coordination software such as ETAP.

· Strong understanding of protection relay principles.

· Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.

· Effective communication and teamwork abilities.

· Familiarity with SCADA systems and communication protocols (DNP3, Modbus, IEC 61850).Independent working style, highly flexible for global travel and going the extra mile

· Excellent communication & professional networking skills.

· Strong intercultural sensitivity and ability to work with teams and stakeholders around the globe.

· Willingness to travel occasionally for field inspections and project meetings.

· Ability to work under pressure and meet project deadlines.

· Commitment to continuous learning and professional development in the field of power system protection.

· Proficiency in medium voltage electrical reticulation and switchgear is a dvantageous.
