Location: Bascom Palmer Eye Institute

The Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) delivers medical care to a wide variety of patients. The APRN also examines and treats patients independently and in autonomous collaboration with other health care professionals. Ensures proper illness and injury care and disease prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and recovery. May prescribe medications and order diagnostic tests. Advises patients about continuing care.

JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Completes admission history & physical examination on all medical inpatients within 24 hours of admission. Reviews findings, labs, interprets diagnostic tests and consults with supervising physician.

  • Completes history and physical on all surgical patients starting at 15 years of age. Reviews findings, labs, interprets diagnostic tests and consults with supervising physician.

  • Participates in the examination and evaluation of patients as it pertains to medical incidents under the direction of the supervising physician as per collaborative agreement.

  • Acts as a liaison between Nursing and the Medical Service to ensure proper follow-through on all new admissions and/or pre-operative patients.

  • Recognizes the clinical importance of allowing adolescents (age 15 and older) to verbalize fears and concerns about his/her disease.

  • Recognizes signs of abuse and/or neglect in adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients. Reports findings to MD and Patient Representative.

  • Collaborates with supervising physician and/or medical screening MD in making recommendations for medical consults.

  • Collaborates with the supervising physician, and the medical service to ensure each patient scheduled for surgery has been properly screened.

  • Recommends pre-operative medication for the day of surgery and orders appropriate diagnostic testing and consultations, as necessary.

  • Discharge patients with appropriate pre-operative instructions for surgery.

  • Competent in recognizing signs and symptoms of chemical dependency in all patients over the age of 15.

  • Responds to emergencies when paged as a member of the Rapid Response Team.

  • Reports incidents in event reporting system.

  • Follow up phone call for all emergent cases.

  • Collaborates in providing initial workup for blood and body fluid exposures, as necessary. Reports and refers employees to EHO & UM Occupational Health Clinic.

  • Refers employees with red eye to the Emergency Department.

  • Participates in QA activities according to Joint Commission Standards as requested.

  • Participates in all activities that further professional growth and development.

  • Attends mandatory in-services and CBLs

  • Performs and documents complete physical examinations and comprehensive health histories.

  • Functions independently to perform age-appropriate history and physical for patients.

  • Orders and interprets diagnostic and therapeutic tests relative to patient’s age-specific needs.

  • Prescribes appropriate pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic treatment modalities

  • Implements interventions to support the patient to regain or maintain physiologic stability.

  • Assists with the provision of care in accordance with facility, state, and federal regulations.

  • Monitors the effectiveness of interventions.

  • Facilitates the patient’s transition within and between health care settings, e.g. admitting, transferring, and discharging patients.

  • Collaborates with multidisciplinary team members by making appropriate referrals.

  • Facilitates staff, patient and family decision making by providing educational tools.

  • Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

CORE QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Master’s degree in Nursing from an accredited program

Certification and Licensing:

  • CPR and ACLS certification required.

  • Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner license from the state of Florida.

  • Certification by the American Nurses Credentialing Center for Nurse Practitioners preferred.

  • Submission of all requested information to the Credentials Committee through the University of Miami.

Experience:

  • One year of experience required. Previous experience as an APRN or a comparable position in a hospital and/or clinical setting.

Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes:

  • Ability to operate all types of hospital equipment necessary to provide for safe patient care.

  • Ability to demonstrate interviewing skills in obtaining a health history and other related data.

  • Ability to utilize physical assessment technique in the performance of a proper physical examination.

  • Ability to speak Spanish preferred.

  • Responsible for the initiation of the history and physical process on BPEI patients 15 years and older for pre-surgical and medical inpatient admissions.

  • Acts as a liaison between all members of the health care team.

  • Responsible for the integration, interpretation and enforcement of JCAHO Standards under the responsibility & direct supervision of the Chief of Medicine or other designated licensed physician, who is an active member in good standing of the Medical Staff of BPEI/ABLEH.
