Position Overview:

SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory’s Accelerator Directorate (AD) aims to create an environment that fosters world-leading accelerator science and technologies for future accelerators while enabling user research and accelerator R&D programs today through a combination of experimental and theoretical research. Working at the forefront of modern and advanced accelerator physics, our scientists develop enabling technologies for existing and future accelerators to create and study nature’s fundamental building blocks and forces.

We are seeking a Project Scientist with a strong background in accelerator physics with an emphasis on advanced accelerator physics simulation and experiments.

Given the nature of this position, SLAC is open to on-site and hybrid work options.

Your specific responsibilities include:

  • Perform advanced electromagnetic simulations of terahertz fields in a transverse deflecting structure to be installed on an FEL beamline at the LCLS.

  • Analyze the transient behavior and propagation of THz waves generated in a wiggler and the modes generated in a deflecting cavity.

  • Evaluate the feasibility and temporal resolution of the deflecting structure as a longitudinal diagnostic tool for attosecond bunches on the ultrafast beamline

  • Represent your research results at seminars, scientific conferences and workshops.

Note : This is a 1 year fixed-term appointment with the possibility of extension depending on project funding and business needs. Applicants should include a cover letter, a statement of research area including brief summary of accomplishments, a curriculum vitae, a list of publications, and names of at least three references from whom letters of recommendation will form part of the application.

To be successful in this position you will bring:

  • PhD in Accelerator or Electromagnetic Physics, or closely-related field with demonstrated coursework and research experience in advanced accelerator physics.

  • Minimum two years of experience with one or more simulation tools for modeling charged particle beams and wakefields, radiation generated in an undulator, EM fields in microwave or THz structures using e.g. Microwave Studio, HFSS, ABCI, PIC codes.

  • Minimum two years of experience in the design and commissioning of diagnostics for advanced accelerator experiments and/or THz devices.
