Air Education and Training Command RECREATION ASSISTANT in Maxwell AFB, Alabama

The primary purpose of this position is to support all outdoor leadership and team building activities. This support involves the set-up and tear down of all equipment and water containers needed for activities. Will also be responsible for the maintenance of athletic fields, to include basic grounds maintenance activities such as grass mowing. Responsibilities Plans and administers professional leadership support program. Set-up outdoor exercise routes; set up and tear down equipment to include start and finish lines, tables, water stands, water coolers, first aid coolers, medical bags, route signs, stanchions, and time clocks. Maintain acres of athletic fields, including cutting, aerating, rolling, dragging, watering, and leveling grassed areas, laying out lining for playing fields, replacing goal backdrops Maintain outdoor curriculum activities and equipment for the schools. Use office automation software to create, format, modify, edit, and print a variety of letters, reports, memos, and other textual documents. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications In order to qualify, you must meet the specialized experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for General Schedule Positions, Technical and Medical Support Positions SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-04 level (or equivalent in other pay systems) in the federal service in which equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to perform successfully the duties of the position. Specialized experience is experience which includes performing work that included (1) group leader, counselor, or similar work in public and private recreation programs for adults or children such as summer camps, local playgrounds, YWCA and YMCA clubs, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, urban community centers, or resort recreational activities; (2) teacher's aid in an elementary school recreation or physical education program, with emphasis on development of general recreational skills and abilities; (3) aid or assistant in assignments in recreation while on active military service; (4) aid or assistant in the organization and administration of recreational activities, such as preparing activity calendars, maintaining attendance records, and providing information concerning schedules and activities; (5) summer aid in a state or national park, with duties related to visitor recreational areas including campsites, trails, picnic areas, nature and raft centers, and boating and fishing areas (e.g., demonstrating camping techniques and park safety, conducting nature tours, and overseeing farm animal areas provided for children); (6) sales or stock clerk in a recreation supply and equipment shop; (7) aid or assistant in the issuance of authorized property, and in the maintenance of inventory control and accountability for such property in a recreation facility; or (8) aid or assistant in a hotel or resort recreation service, with duties such as setting up areas for games, tournaments, and other organized group recreational activities. OR EDUCATION: Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with major study of at least 24 semester hours in courses related to recreation or physical education. OR COMBINATION OF EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100 percent. To combine education and experience, determine the total qualifying experience as a percentage of the experience required for the grade level. Then determine the education as a percentage of the education required for the grade level. Finally, add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify an applicant for that grade level. NOTE: YOU MUST SUBMIT COPIES OF YOUR OFFICIAL TRANSCRIPTS. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas: 1. Knowledge of basic lawn/turf care principles 2. Knowledge of Lawn Equipment, Tractors, Turf Blowers, Turf Vacuum Turf Painting equipment 3. Knowledge of commonly used supply procedures, forms, and nomenclature to perform routine supply tasks 4. Ability to take diagrams, maps, and verbal instruction to set up various Field and Team Building Courses 5. Knowledge of Microsoft Office, Word, Excel, PowerPoint 6. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Additional Information PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Duties require physical exertion with long periods of standing when overseeing sports and special events programs. Recurring bending, stooping, and stretching when cleaning machines/weight equipment, training employees on cleaning weight equipment, and when lifting moderately heavy items up to 50 pounds. May be required to direct staff and assist with setting up sports programs and special events such as, maintenance of FLEX fields, volleyball courts, loading/unloading tables and chairs and other manual labor.
