DUTIES

ANNUAL SALARY

$44,912 to $65,646 and $48,399 to $70,762

The salary range in the Department of Water and Power is $54,726 to $67,985; $64,393 to $80,012; $77,694 to $99,889; and $80,179 to 103,084

A Garage Attendant does general servicing and lubricating of cars, trucks and motorcycles; shuttling of passengers; parking cars; washing and waxing; may make minor repairs to vehicles; assists equipment mechanics by removing and replacing defective radiators, hoses, fan belts, and batteries; replaces tires on cars and trucks in the shop and in the field; may operate a light to heavy duty tow truck; may make minor repairs to vehicles; may install or remove various interior and exterior vehicle equipment; and may perform other non-skilled tasks as required and does other non-skilled tasks. Apprenticeships in various automotive crafts are available in some Garage Attendant positions.

REQUIREMENT(S)/MINIMUM QUALIFICATION(S)

One year of full time paid experience servicing automotive vehicles.

  1. A valid Californias drivers license is required at the time of filing. Applicants will be disqualified and not eligible for hire if their record within the last 36 months reflects three or more moving violations and/or at-fault accidents, or a conviction of a major moving violation (such as DUI).

  2. Some positions may require a valid California Class B drivers license and valid medical certificate approved by the California Department of Motor vehicles, prior to appointment. Candidates may not be eligible for appointment to these positions if their record within the last 36 months reflects three or more moving violations and/or at-fault accidents, or a conviction of a major moving violation (such as DUI).

  3. The term servicing of automobiles refers to oil changes, fluid checks, and minor repairs which includes but not limited to changing light bulbs, removing dents, replacing windshield wipers, and replacing tires.

SELECTION PROCESS

The examination will consist entirely of a weighted multiple-choice test administered and p octored on-line. In the on-line multiple choice test, the following competencies may be evaluated: Self-Management; Safety Focus; Interpersonal Skills; Teamwork; Follow Written Directions; Job Knowledge, including knowledge of: various hand and air tools, such as pliers, wrenches, sockets sets, grease guns, impact wrench, and air tire changer; safe operation of lifting equipment/devices, such as hoists, floor jacks, and safety stands; various types of lubricants, oils, and greases used in performing routine vehicle maintenance; various operating systems such as the cooling system, brakes, power steering, window washer, motor oil, transmission, and differential in order to refill to perform routine maintenance; basic engine components and accessories on vehicles such as the engine, transmission, transaxle, brakes, power steering, master cylinder, cooling system, dipsticks, air and oil filters, and battery for preventative maintenance purposes; tire care and applications such as tread depth, size of vehicle, and size of rim and whether to use street or off-road tires; safe and proper use of tire replacement tools such as impact wrenches, floor jacks, pneumatic jacks, and torque wrenches; routine tire visual inspection in identifying punctures, defective tires for tread separation, wear patterns, and sidewall damage; routine cleaning procedures of vehicles such as washing, waxing, vacuuming; routine shop or garage maintenance such as proper use and storage of cleaning solvents, general shop clean up and proper storage of tools and equipment; basic battery maintenance such as cleaning and replacing battery when necessary; safe charging or jump starting procedures; read maps and/or interpret written directional instructions; and other necessary skills, knowledge, and abilities.

The multiple-choice test will be proctored and administered on-line during a single session. Candidates invited to participate in the on-line multiple-choice test will be able to take the test from a remote location (i.e. their home) using a computer with a webcam and a reliable internet connection. Candidates will receive an e-mail from the City of Los Angeles outlining the dates and specific steps on how to take the multiple-choice test on-line. It is anticipated that the remote proctored multiple-choice test will be held betweenTUESDAY, JULY 30, 2024 and MONDAY, AUGUST 5, 2024. Candidates who do not complete and submit the multiple-choice test on-line using a computer by the specified date and time will not be considered further in this examination.
