Los Alamos National Laboratory Senior Solutions Architect (Solutions Architect 4) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

The Application and Data Services (ADS) Division supports Los Alamos National Laboratory's (LANL) enterprise applications and performs software application development support, database development and administration, software quality management, and enterprise application consulting. The Business Applications and Data Services (BADS) provides custom application development, commercial off-the-shelf application implementation, database administration, and adoption/integration with Software as a Service solutions. BADS supports business processes for financial, personnel, procurement, and human resources IT systems.

We are seeking an experienced Solutions Architect to join our dynamic software team. Working alongside some of the brightest minds, you will work with a team using agile development methodologies that supports existing custom and COTS applications. You will also design, develop, test, and deploy new functionality to any new or existing applications the team is working on. Beyond daily tasks needed on the team, in this role, you will also provide technical leadership to the team and group by providing future vision, determining Laboratory-wide requirements, and incorporating them into COTS or custom solutions.

On any given day, as a principal architect, you will be expected to:

  • Be responsible for oversight and development of project documentation, schedules, and resource utilization through coordination with Scrum Master and Product Owner.

  • Architect complex systems solutions all while adhering to industry best practices.

  • Provide technical mentorship to junior members of the team along with architectural direction for complex systems.

  • Have a strong desire to learn new technologies, business processes, to become an expert in their field, and the willingness and confidence to develop advanced concepts, techniques, and standards based on professional principles and theories in developing safety-class, mission-critical software.

  • Self-initiate work with limited supervision, use independent judgment for determining the course of action to accomplish objectives, and use a broad range of advanced technical skills to solve complex technical issues.

  • Conduct on-call responsibilities along with after-hours production work on the existing systems.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Proven software lifecycle knowledge and experience in all phases, including requirements, design, development, and testing with appropriate documentation.

  • Experience writing and implementing business solutions using agile practices and principles.

  • Experience preparing software design documentation, project planning timelines and estimates.

  • Experience designing, working, and utilizing relational and non-relational Databases.

  • Hands on experience architecting/integrating all aspects of Procure to Pay (P2P).

  • Experience and process knowledge of Supplier Lifecycle, Buying and Invoicing, Catalog, Souring, Contracts and Ariba Workflows.

  • Knowledge of the DevSecOps culture and principles and experience with CI/CD development, and deployment of software in diverse application environments.

  • Software configuration management experience and knowledge of software quality assurance methodologies and practices.

  • Proven knowledge of secure coding practices.

  • Experience analyzing and defining business requirements and preparing technical designs.

  • Experience utilizing a distributed version control system.

Education/Experience : Position requires a Bachelor's degree and 15 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level, postgraduate coursework may be expected.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience utilizing Scrum or Kanban framework.

  • Experience with integration strategies and platforms (such as Boomi), including development of system integration plans, with a variety of applications and architectures.

  • Experience developing system implementation plans and system upgrade plans.

  • Experience supporting and extending Cloud applications.

  • Knowledge of the DevSecOps culture and principles and experience CI/CD development, and deployment of software in a diverse application environment.

  • Experience with SAP Ariba and Fieldglass Integrations/Interfaces.

  • Experience with Oracle Project Accounting, General Ledger, Fixed Assets, Payables, Advanced Receivables, Cash Management, Inventory, Purchasing.

  • Experience and demonstrated skill in conducting research, investigating alternative solutions, and recommending solutions to problems.

  • Ability to work independently with minimal direction and/or serve as a Technical Lead on projects and coordinate technical activities of project personnel.

  • Demonstrate experience and willingness to provide technical mentorship to junior staff members.

  • Strong teamwork and communication skills.

Work Environment:

Work Location: The work location for this position has the potential for remote work. Remote work is defined as working offsite that is greater than 2 hours of the Laboratory location. Reporting onsite may be periodically necessary. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 (https://directives.nnsa.doe.gov/supplemental-directive/sd-0206-0002) . Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Incentive Compensation Program: Position is eligible to participate in the Triad Incentive Compensation Program. You must be in an eligible position for a minimum of 3 months, before July 1st and remain in an eligible position as of the end of the fiscal year, September 30th. The annual distribution is prorated based on the number of months in the eligible position.
