Los Alamos National Laboratory Senior Project Leader (Scientist 4) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

The Intelligence and Space Research Division at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is looking for a technically and programmatically accomplished individual to contribute to the leadership, management, coordination, and development of the space-based U.S. Nuclear Detonation Detection System (USNDS) program at Los Alamos. This large enterprise supports a broad suite of interagency activities related to the development and sustainment of space and ground systems for persistent, global nuclear detonation monitoring missions.

The selected candidate will serve as the Senior Project Leader (SPL) responsible for USNDS-related Strategic Partnership Projects (SPPs) performed for the USNDS program office of the U.S. Space Force's Space Systems Command (SSC). This portfolio is currently $7M /yr spread across multiple major projects/tasks related to development and sustainment of USNDS ground systems and performance assurance of USNDS space systems. In addition to oversight of this portfolio, the selected candidate will also coordinate with Project and Task Leaders and Line Leadership to manage and deconflict technical resources, and you will contribute to workforce development of technical staff. It is anticipated that this position will be at least 50% FTE, with possible additional duties depending upon the qualifications and interests of the successful candidate.

You will serve as the day-to-day manager and overseer of a broad, high-impact portfolio of research that supports the operations and future development of the USNDS program. Working with project and task leads, you will ensure the execution of critical work in support of our programmatic partners, particularly SSC, and you will facilitate the growth of laboratory capabilities by supporting the professional development of the staff supporting your projects. You will be responsible for interacting with sponsors, providing high-level briefings to internal and external stakeholders, and developing and implementing a strategy for the continued success and potential growth of your portfolio and the projects within it.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Demonstrated success proposing and developing innovative research projects and/or capabilities from original vision through end deliverable/outcome.

  • Demonstrated Project Leader, Principal Investigator, or Task Leader experience on projects with complex scope and rigorous milestones and deliveries that must be met within constrained cost and schedule; demonstrated knowledge of project management standards, tools, and techniques.

  • Demonstrated strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to lead and influence within the context of internal and external collaborations. Excellent communication skills in writing reports, developing and delivering briefings, and/or peer-reviewed papers.

  • Demonstrated ability to work with a diverse team of professionals spanning scientists, engineers, sponsors, and stakeholders. Demonstrated ability to lead a team to success through a complex risk landscape.

  • Demonstrated ability in workforce development, capability sustainment, and mentoring or coaching.

Education/Experience : Position requires a Master's degree in a STEM field from an accredited college or university and 12 years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of observational data analysis algorithms, software, systems, and processes.

  • Knowledge of space-based nuclear detonation detection, including technical & programmatic approach, system design, needs and stakeholders.

  • Knowledge of USNDS ground systems and operations.

  • Knowledge of nuclear weapons outputs and/or effects.

  • Knowledge of emerging nuclear threat landscape.

Work Environment:

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q(Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
