Los Alamos National Laboratory R&D Engineer 2/3 (Digital Systems Engineer) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

This position will be filled at either the R&D Engineer 2 or 3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

The Digital Engineering Strategy (W-DES) group seeks a passionate Digital Systems Engineer (DSE) to help drive the expansion and advancement of Digital Engineering initiatives at LANL, bolstering our core mission. R&D Engineer 2

This position will support creation and maintenance of digital models for systems engineering efforts on current and future programs. The successful candidate will work closely with Systems Engineers, Subject Matter Experts, and Program Managers to accurately capture system architecture, functionality, and requirements in a way to provide meaningful insight into programs and traceability of weapon products. The DSE will need to be highly collaborative and demonstrate flexibility when supporting new approaches to systems engineering.

R&D Engineer 3

At this level, the DSE will be expected to lead project or program requirements engineering efforts. The successful candidate will also help to develop and enhance DSE processes being utilized as well as provide training for staff on the usefulness and capabilities of the tools. The DSE will regularly collaborate with external customers in support of weapon programs. The DSE also must demonstrate the ability to work on multiple tasks for multiple customers with changing priorities and be able to successfully meet customer deadlines and requirements.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Systems Engineering Experience: An understanding of systems engineering principles including experience with the design, development, test, or manufacturing of complex mechanical systems. Basic knowledge of system architecture, requirements management, and the verification and validation process is expected.

Collaboration/Teaming: Demonstrated ability to work closely with teams. Must be able to build and maintain effective relationships with internal and external customers, as well as horizontal integrations across programs.

Communication: Strong written and verbal communication skills. Must have the ability to communicate efficiently and effectively to coordinate systems engineering activities across programs.

Personal Leadership: Ability to operate independently and exercise personal initiative in completing assigned tasks

Education/Experience at R&D Engineer 2 level: Position requires a bachelor's degree in engineering from an accredited institution and 4 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level a master's may be preferred.

Additional Job Requirements for R&D Engineer 3:

Knowledge and Expertise: Advanced knowledge and experience in digital engineering strategy development and implementation including requirements management, model-based definitions, model based systems engineering, digital thread solutions, product life-cycle management, resource planning and execution, and associated data management.

Communication: Demonstrated excellent oral and written communication skills as evidenced by internal and/or external interactions, seminars, briefings, presentations, and publications. Demonstrated experience in developing and nurturing effective external and internal customer relationships. Demonstrated experience in interacting effectively with all levels of personnel, building trust, gaining consensus, and resolving conflicts.

Leadership: Demonstrated experience in providing leadership, strategy development, and overall direction for execution of complex and technically challenging projects requiring multidisciplinary integration across organizations. Demonstrated record of successful technical leadership and proven ability in team building and mentoring.

Project planning: Proven ability to develop a plan that covers the program/project work from conception to completion. Demonstrated experience in developing work scope, identifying necessary skills, schedules, and coordinating work activities.

Education/Experience at R&D Engineer 3 level: Position requires a master's degree in engineering from an accredited institution and 6 years of related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:

R&D Engineer 2:

• Experience with MBSE and common modeling approaches. Understanding of current MBSE technologies as well as future roadmaps

• Experience with Systems Modeling Language (SysML) or other data architecture approaches (DoDAF, UML, OSLC, etc.)

• Experience with PTC Windchill and Creo software for configuration data management and design definition.

R&D Engineer 3:

• Advanced knowledge of systems engineering standards

• Experience with requirements management and associated requirements management tools

• Demonstrated experience in nuclear weapons development, qualification, and certification

• Knowledgeable of Integrated Work Management (IWM) and Integrated Safety and Security Management (ISSM) procedures.

• Active Q clearance, or the ability to obtain an Active Q clearance

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 (https://directives.nnsa.doe.gov/supplemental-directive/sd-0206-0002) . Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
