Los Alamos National Laboratory is looking for an exceptional R&D Engineer to join our Actinide Material Processing and Power (AMPP) organization. The successful candidate will work as part of a multidisciplinary team to develop and transition new production processes and methods to safe reliable production, lead continuous improvement efforts, evaluate backfill process data, develop and implement detailed operating procedures for various assembly processes, and support manufacturing in the PF-5 facility. R&D engineers are expected to be well versed in mechanical systems, vacuum systems and conduct of operations at TA-55. Development and production activities require working in a team environment with other engineers, scientists, and technicians within the LANL, DOE, DoD, and other institutions.

The successful candidate will:

  • Support engineering activities as they relate to component manufacturing with specific responsibilities in the areas of manufacturing and operation.

  • Assist in the development of solutions to complex problems, improve production cycle times, and maximize production yield rates.

  • Work will be accomplished with limited direction, on all but the most complex problems and solutions. Engineers operating in this position are expected to execute work and projects with minimal oversight with nominal supervision on all but the most complex problems and solutions.

  • Experience working in gloveboxes/atmosphere controlled boxes to troubleshoot and evaluate equipment.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Engineering Experience: Demonstrated knowledge of and experience in one or more of the following engineering disciplines: systems engineering, electrical engineering, reliability engineering or mechanical engineering. Demonstrated knowledge of and experience in designing, planning, and executing research and development projects.

Engineering Expertise: Demonstrated knowledge of vacuum system procedure development. Demonstrated expertise and knowledge of vacuum systems used in manufacturing as well as processes or approaches used to optimize vacuum systems.

Problem Solving Skills: Demonstrated experience and success in troubleshooting vacuum systems and production of products meeting detailed technical specifications.

Technical Accomplishments: Must have a strong record of technical accomplishments (provide examples) within a professional work environment.

Communication: Demonstrated successful skill with interpersonal, written, and verbal communications.

Education/Experience: This position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering (metallurgy, materials science, electrical engineering, welding engineering, chemical engineering, nuclear engineering, reliability engineering, or industrial engineering) from an ABET accredited institution and 4 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Experience in the following Conduct of Engineering Principles:

  • Developing Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA) process for new and existing assets.

  • Performing data analysis to predict and curb failures before they occur.

  • Performing Root Cause Analysis for recurring failures and recommending corrective action.

  • Developing maintenance plans to enhance reliability.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Knowledge and experience with nondestructive analysis methods.

  • Demonstrated application of Lean Six Sigma, SPC, and other production monitoring methods.

  • Demonstrated programming and deploying production procedures using advanced equipment from various manufacturers.

  • Experience in project development, reporting, and presentation to management and sponsors.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of statistical, mathematical, and engineering concepts

  • Experience using statistical and probability methods and tools

  • Critical and problem-solving skills

  • Logical thinking

  • Exceptional organizational and communication skills

  • Ability to multitask and prioritize workloads

  • Active DOE Q security clearance.

Location: This position will be located in Los Alamos, NM.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

HRP: This position is subject to the requirements of the DOE Human Reliability Program as specified in 10 Code of Federal Regulation, Part 712, §712.11. These requirements include on going drug and alcohol testing, as well as periodic medical and psychological evaluations.

426.2: This position is subject to DOE Order 426.2, Personnel Selection, Training, and Qualification Requirements for DOE Nuclear Facilities, which establishes entry-level requirements to ensure candidates selected for specific positions can successfully perform the requirements of the job.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
