What You Will Do

Located in northern New Mexico, Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is primarily responsible for monitoring the safety and reliability of the U.S. nuclear stockpile and conducting advanced research in numerous areas related to national security. Additionally, it is a center for research in a wide range of scientific disciplines, including space exploration, geophysics, renewable energy, supercomputing, medicine, and nanotechnology.

Detonator Production (DP) is the premier Production Agency (PA) assigned to produce WR (War Reserve) detonators for the Nation's nuclear stockpile security mission. The Division is part of LANL's Weapons Production Directorate, and is comprised of a team of motivated, highly skilled technical and operational support staff working in an integrated format. The organization is centered on high-rigor manufacturing operations to produce precise, safe, and reliable WR products. DP partners closely with customers and stakeholders such as NNSA (National Nuclear Security Administration), Design Agencies (LANL, Sandia, and Livermore), and LANL program management organizations to deliver on challenging national security objectives. DP upholds vigorous principles including teamwork, personal integrity, continuous improvement in operations, technical excellence, safety, security, and building a respectful workplace.

This position is based in the Detonator Production DP-5 Production Integration Operations Support Group. The selected candidate will assist DP-5 with the implementation and support of the Production Planning and Control (PPC) Framework. More specifically, this candidate will be responsible for Production Performance Monitoring of manufacturing activity durations, and actual versus planned analysis. PPC is a highly visible, high impact program which requires a capable candidate with the ability to both implement aspects of a technical program and engage with stakeholders at all levels at LANL.

The PPC functions that this candidate will be responsible for require technical understanding of manufacturing systems, processes, and tools at TA-22, such as the SOMS MES.

This position will be filled at the Production Control and Analysis Level 3 or 4, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

Production Control and Analysis 3 ($83,900 - $136,600)

The Production Control and Analysis position will facilitate the implementation of the Production Performance aspect of the Production Planning and Control framework in support of the detonator production mission.

The successful candidate will:

  • Implement, sustain, and improve manufacturing activity durations analysis.

  • Conduct a daily analysis of manufacturing process step opening and closing times and compare them to standard durations.

  • Create a daily report defining the results of durations analysis, to include reasons why durations exceeded the standard.

  • Create metrics reporting methods to track and trend categories of causal factors that are consistent drivers of exceeded durations.

  • Recommend opportunities for improvement to manage and prevent excessive durations variance.

  • Assist with the creation of reports utilized for durations analysis.

  • Work collaboratively with stakeholders to ensure standard process step durations are defined and refined over time to maintain accuracy in support of the production schedule.

  • Independently present Production Performance aspects of the PPC framework at project meetings

  • Adapt to evolving needs while meeting safety, security, compliance, and schedule requirements.

  • Understand and adhere to all Laboratory and industry regulatory guidance and governance specific to nuclear materials management.

Production Control and Analysis 4 ($101,700 - $168,200)

In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level the candidate will be expected to:

  • Apply broad and diversified knowledge of manufacturing principles to implement best practices related to Production Performance

  • Use sound technical judgement to respond to unforeseen issues without requiring the input of leadership.

  • Use creative technical judgement to improve the PPC implementation by recommending solutions to complex issues.

  • Utilize advanced expert-level knowledge of manufacturing concepts such as Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP), Materials Requirements Planning (MRP), and Manufacturing Execution System (MES).

  • ERP, MRP, MES, and PLM systems to improve Production Performance

  • Serves as a mentor to other production control staff and contributes to the overall professional development of the organization

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Sound knowledge of production work planning and control methods

  • General knowledge of resource management practices

  • Broad knowledge of configuration management, equipment changeover, and setup routines

  • Demonstrated leadership skills including personal integrity and accountability; effective oral and written communications; commitment to quality and excellence with a broad institutional motivation and focus; experience mentoring and developing people; strong team building and conflict resolution skills; and the ability to influence personnel at all levels to include internal and external stakeholders.

  • Experience in conduct of operations associated with manufacturing and operating in laboratory type facilities.

Additional Job Requirements for Production Control and Analysis 4:

In addition to the requirements outlined above, the Production Control and Analysis 4 requires expert-level knowledge, skills, and abilities such as:

  • Expert knowledge of production work planning and control methods

  • Expert knowledge of resource planning and optimization practices

  • Expert-level knowledge and/or experience with manufacturing concepts and systems such as Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP), Materials Requirements Planning (MRP), and Manufacturing Execution System (MES).

Education/Experience at PCS3 level: Position requires a minimum of 8 years related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Education/Experience at PCS4 level: Position requires 12 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of related education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated knowledge or experience working in a manufacturing or production organization requiring implementation of defined manufacturing, testing and quality requirements.

  • Experience with manufacturing process step definition and traveler development.

  • Demonstrated experience achieving required objectives in a production environment.

  • Demonstrated experience applying continuous improvement concepts.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of conduct of operations principles.

  • Existing DOE "Q" clearance (or similar).

Work Environment:

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Incentive Compensation Program: Position is eligible to participate in the Triad Incentive Compensation Program.
