Los Alamos National Laboratory Operations Support Specialist 2/3 (WFO) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

This position will be filled at either the Operations Support Specialist 2 or 3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

The Weapons Facility Operations (WFO) Division is seeking an Operations Support Specialist to join our dynamic team. WFO is responsible for facilitating mission execution at DARHT (Accelerator Facility), the High Explosives (HE) Sciences, Firing and Detonator Facilities and at the Weapons Engineering Tritium Facility (WETF). The selected candidate will report to the WFO-HE Access Control Team Lead, primarily providing Access Control support for the High Explosive Areas and other facility operations related functions.

The selected candidate will qualify as an Access Control officer for all areas within the WFO portfolio. This individual will also and be responsible for a multitude of tasks to include, but not limited to: administering access to personnel, personnel accountability, maintain HE activity knowledge, coordinating access with programmatic managers and HE point of contacts, and providing appropriate coverage for after-hours operations. The selected candidate will relay hazards and controls, facilitate emergency response, maintain badge reader, and provide site access metrics as requested, assist in procedure updates and development, and participation in projects/assessments. The candidate will be familiar with the overall facility operations within WFO and provide operational assistance to programmatic customers as directed by the Access Control Team Leader and WFO Operations Manager.

Operations Support Specialist 2 $69,500 - $110,300

Specifically, the Operations Support Specialist 2 will:

  • Provide customer service to internal customers and external customers.

  • Provide direct support of operations in programs, facilities, or organizations that have an operational or process-based deliverable.

  • Ensure that the process is followed through to completion with efficiency, accuracy, and with high quality, while understanding and maintaining priorities.

  • Assist with procurements and tracking procurement progress.

  • Assist with and coordinate the review and revision of procedures, scope, and process development and improvement pertaining to organizational or facility operations.

  • Provide issues management support for a diverse range of complex issues where analysis of data requires evaluation of identifiable factors, including the compilation, review, and assessment of data and the development of management assessments and/or recommendations.

  • Contribute to the organization's goals and objectives.

  • Work under limited direction; receive general instructions on new assignments. Work is evaluated upon completion to ensure objectives have been met.

Operations Support Specialist 3 $83,900 - $136,600

In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level the Operations Support Specialist 3 will:

  • Update team leaders on schedule status, issues that need deconflicting, and other risks associated with the successful execution of a project Assist with operational activities of programmatic projects (e.g., work execution) to ensure craft and other entities are ready to execute work.

  • Assist with the development of detailed plans to manage processes, scope, quality, efficiency, risk, communications, and professional responsibility.

  • Coordinate the review and revision of procedures, specifications, and forms pertaining to facility operations.

  • Develop, lead, and coordinate various administrative functions in conjunction with or in support of programmatic project compliance, including planning, prioritizing, and scheduling of work activities.

  • Coordinate the development of corrective actions that accurately address apparent and root cause.

  • Network with senior internal and external personnel. Requires limited responsibility for making routine contacts on general matters outside of the immediate organization.

  • Responsible for the development and coordination of presentations and briefings and conducting critiques.

  • Develop resolutions to complex problems that require the frequent use of creativity and where analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth evaluation of variable factors.

What You Need

Minimum Requirements for Operations Support Specialist 2 :

  • Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication and listening skills.

  • Experience with basic operations support functions or processes such as: issues management, training, document control and records management, lessons learned, procurement, assessments, and metrics.

  • Understanding of work hazards and safety practices

  • Advanced knowledge of Laboratory policies and requirements related to the assigned work.

  • Experience working effectively under pressure of deadlines, interruptions, and changing priorities, and the ability to follow multiple tasks to completion.

  • Ability to work with team-members, other organizations, and customers and to solve problems.

  • Experience making independent decisions and researching, analyzing, and resolving problems both independently and as a team member.

  • Demonstrated strong interpersonal skills providing excellent and professional customer service to individuals at all levels.

  • Demonstrated attention to detail.

  • Exceptional customer service, organizational skills and ability to interact with all levels of personnel internal and external to the Laboratory.

  • Experience working with Microsoft Office products and/or other standardized data entry software.

Additional Job Requirements for Operations Support Specialist 3:

In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires advanced knowledge of those requirements and the following:

  • Advanced understanding of work hazards and safety practices and operational policies and procedures.

  • Advanced knowledge of facility operations functions such as: operations, maintenance, facility rounds and surveillances, engineering, safety basis, environmental health and safety, quality assurance, training program, abnormal event response, and contractor assurance.

  • Advanced knowledge of documentation quality assurance, including document controls and records management

  • Ability to follow and inform improvements in procedures, policies, and processes

  • Demonstrated ability to be the primary spokesperson to report any issues to all levels of management, staff, and external and internal customers.

  • Demonstrated experience interpreting project schedules and a proven ability to conceptualize and communicate major elements of project deliverables and milestones to both technical and non-technical personnel.

Education/Experience for Operations Support Specialist 2: Position requires an associate degree in a relevant field from an accredited institution and 4 years of directly related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Education/Experience for Operations Support Specialist 3: Position requires a bachelor's degree in a relevant field from an accredited institution and 5 years of directly related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level, post graduate course work may be desirable.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens.
