DESCRIPTION

The Department of Parks, Recreation and Marine is seeking qualified candidates interested in applying for a Youth Sports Coordinator-Dodgers Dreamteam position. This position will work in partnership with the Los Angeles Dodgers Foundation (LADF), the local community and City staff to effectively deliver the Dodgers Dreamteam program.

The Department of Parks, Recreation and Marine is a nationally recognized and award-winning organization with 1,100 full-time/part-time staff and a budget of $74 million. The Department oversees facilities and programs that reflect the needs and interests of a culturally diverse community, including: 170 parks with more than 3,200 acres devoted to open space and recreation, 27 community centers, 3 public pools, 6 miles of beaches, and 3 marinas

The Department provides free and fee-based recreational programs and leisure opportunities, both self-directed and organized, for people of all ages and cultures. Youth programs include free youth sports for ages 5 to 14 serving nearly 10,000 participants annually, summer and vacation day camps, 2,100 recreational and educational classes, sailing and aquatics instruction, teen center activities, skateboarding opportunities, and supervised afterschool and weekend activities at parks and schools. In addition, approximately 12,000 youth participate in non-Department sports leagues that utilize park facilities.

Non-Career employees are allowed a maximum of 1,600 work hours available over a 12-month period, and are considered temporary, at-will employees who are not typically eligible for benefits. However, non-career employees may qualify for health coverage and sick leave accruals subject to applicable federal and state provisions.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

The Youth Sports Coordinator assigned to the Dodgers Dreamteam program is responsible for the following duties, including but not limited to:

  • Recruits players/participants for the Dodgers Dreamteam program.

  • Recruits and assigns coaches for all of the Dodgers Dreamteam programs and site(s).

  • Sets goals and establishes plans to continue to grow participation in the Dodgers Dreamteam program with a specific focus on girls, teens and Black youth.

  • Manages and coordinates Field Champions to maximize participation and engagement in the community (Field Champions are assigned by LADF through a partnership with Up2Us Sports).

  • Serves as a liaison in your community to engage kids and families in the Dodgers Dreamteam program and educate them about what the program has to offer.

  • Provides ongoing communication directly with parents and families to help them understand the logistics of the program operations.

  • Serves as the primary point of contact for LADF staff (LADF staff will work with the Dodgers Dreamteam Coordinator to provide resources to support the implementation of the program, including equipment and uniforms).

  • Manages all scheduling associated with the Dodgers Dreamteam program.

  • Attends games and practices and be the visible point of contact for staff, coaches, volunteers, and participants in the program.

  • Schedules and secures umpires for all Dodgers Dreamteam program games.

  • Maintains the use of LeagueApps, ensuring that player and coach registrations are up-to-date, and all rosters are created and regularly maintained throughout the season.

  • Works with LADF to complete SEL surveys for program participants using Hello Insight pre- and post-surveys.

  • Creates a Parent Advisory Team (PAT) within the City (a volunteer parent involvement group to support parent engagement).

  • Promotes and recruits participants for ongoing programs that LADF offers.

  • Provides data and information to LADF to support the implementation and growth of the program.

  • Performs other related duties as required.

REQUIREMENTS TO FILE

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Five (5) years of experience working in recreation or a related field, including two years of experience acting as lead staff (an equivalent amount of education in a related area may substitute for up to one year).

  • Working knowledge of the youth and adult sports offered, but not limited to, include basketball, indoor soccer, t-ball/baseball/softball, volleyball, flag football, ball hockey, kick ball, futsal/outdoor soccer.

  • Ability and willingness to work weekday evenings and Saturdays.

  • Must possess a valid driver license at the time of selection.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Word and Excel.

  • Experience working with children and adults with a wide range of ethnic, cultural, and socio-economic backgrounds.

The successful candidate will possess the following:

  • Outstanding customer service and strong organizational skills.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

  • Ability to work independently and exercise good judgment.

  • Ability to evaluate and improve the Youth Sports experience for participants.

  • Ability to effectively communicate with the public, coaches, LBUSD personnel, and interdepartmental staff.
