Shell Energy Europe & Africa (SE-EA) is part of Shell Trading & Supply organisation with a focus on European gas and power markets, and global emissions market. This role will be part of European Power commercial business team located in London.

Our dynamic and rapidly growing programme team is seeking a Commercial (Business) Data Engineer to lead and support optimised data designs, management, stewardship, and governance for data utilised by all capabilities in front office, including but not limited to new deals, assets, meteorology, algo, and fundamentals. This role will be imperative in helping to define, and deliver the vision and strategy for data across Gas, Power, and EPT to optimise SE-EA business value.

This role will also stretch across the Ada programme, which encompasses a vast functional footprint require leading data experts covering all aspects of the E2E delivery. These roles will be key contributors to the design, implementation, and optimisation of ETRM and wider ecosystem systems and processes.

What’s the role?

The primary accountabilities of the Trading Tech, Data, and Automation Lead are:

  • Primary interface and partner to functions and IT, representing the SE-EA Business for all infrastructure & architecture commercially.

  • Own ingestion, assessment, measurement, quality, timeliness, and accuracy of SE-EA business data.

  • Formal data governor, working with technical data engineers to establish the ‘to-be’ data model and architecture.

  • Build and manage a team to deliver the systemic platform of ‘2030 and beyond’ to cater to significant demands of SE-EA’s growing gas & power businesses, including renewable natural gas – including innovative learning, design, and adaptation to push industry leading solutions for high volume, low latency business at scale.

  • Remediate, structure, and test the ETRM, ensuring it is capable of exponential volumetric increase, delivering in line with SE-EA strategy for very significant businesses.

  • Ensure modular components outside/around the ETRM which are more complex/computationally intense deliver utmost value to the business, and quantitative calculations are warehoused in the optimum way for progressive data solutions & value extraction (potentially outside the ETRM, but to work seamlessly & connected to it).

  • Partner with ‘pre-trade’: Algos, Fundies, Meterologists, Quants, and IT, to select and implement (full lifecycle; scope, design, build test & deploy) current, as well as all new digital solutions and enhancements to future.

  • Landscapes in readiness for new value propositions or enter new markets.

  • Streamline and enhance the product array and functionality of the commercial trading desks, with the lens of absolute expertise and lengthy experience in best practice for ETRM risk management, valuation & representation – as well as more complex, bespoke modules/products.

  • Work as a focal point to translate new and innovative solutions for the desk, and how to platform these into industrialised and repeatable processes.

  • Capture and share learnings from both internal and external experiences to Shell to help improve data, commercial, and operational decision making in Shell Energy globally – sharing experiences in Europe & Africa with other geographies and Trading & Supply commodity teams.

  • Bring rigour/governance, and collaboration to the delivery structure and where feasible drive towards full end to end automation across all producers and consumers of data.

What we need from you

To succeed in the role, you will have:

  • Extensive experience in trading roles/businesses, ideally with one if not both Gas & Power market & product expertise, and a strong track record of performance & delivery.

  • Deep domain knowledge with trading ecosystems, including experience with Electronic Trade Risk Management systems.

  • Prior work with complex modular trading solutions, including bespoke digital/automated systems, interfaces, including optimisation, automated operation, function, and trading across all multiple European markets.

  • Proven experience in data management with practical working examples, and openness to learn, and swiftly adapt to push industry leading design and solutions for high volume, low latency business at scale.

  • With a perspective across the entire business and functional areas, as well as numerous stakeholder interfaces, this role is well placed to leverage a central position within the organisation to make connections and drive effective change.
