Why this role matters

The External Reporting team sits within the External & Statutory Reporting team within Group Finance which is responsible for producing our quarterly results releases and the Annual Report. We also set the group accounting policies and provide technical accounting advice and review throughout the Group.

We work closely and collaboratively with the other parts of the External & Statutory Reporting team (Consolidation, Subsidiary Reporting, and Audit & Compliance teams) as well as Group FP&A, Group Treasury, Tax, Investor Relations and the reporting teams in each of the business units. This team has great exposure to very senior stakeholders, including regular meetings with the Group CFO and External Auditors.

The External Reporting team is made up of 1 Senior Manager and 4 Managers, with additional resource over the year-end.

What you'll be doing

  • Drive the completion of the Annual Report (including the financial statements) for BT Group plc within set timelines whilst ensuring best practice and compliance with regulations.

  • Manage the quarterly results release process, working with the rest of the team and other stakeholders including Investor Relations and our customer-facing units (CFUs).

  • Oversee the production of the Strategic Report working with multiple stakeholders.

  • Set and monitor adherence to group accounting policies using detailed understanding of accounting standards.

  • Liaise with and advise finance and commercial teams on the accounting implications of deals or new contracts.

  • Manage and develop a team of 4+ direct reports to drive them towards achieving their personal and team objectives.

  • Liaise with the external auditors on their review of our Annual Report and our accounting papers

  • Prepare papers to the Audit Committee and Board, including the quarterly accounting judgements paper.

  • Develop accounting training for the Group to deliver appropriate communication of developments in reporting.

  • Continue our simplification and automation journey using the Workiva platform to improve the financial statements process, improving our controls and automating the population of our reports.

The skills you'll need

  • Qualified Accountant (ACA/ACCA/CIMA or equivalent).

  • Experience of annual reports and financial statements, either within a listed company or within an audit firm.

  • Detailed knowledge of accounting standards, including experience of reviewing and drafting detailed accounting papers.

  • Strong organisational skills, including ability to prioritise own workload under pressure to tight deadlines.

  • Line management experience – ability to direct and lead a team of 4 people.

  • Strong communication skills with the ability to build positive working relationships, supported by strong communication skills.

  • Experience of SAP consolidation or financial reporting systems (BPC/Sr) – preferable.
