ManTech Precision Assembly Technician in LIVERMORE, California

ManTech is seeking an experienced Precision Assembly Technician to join ManTech Livermore Labs Inc. in support of research programs at the DOE’s National Ignition Facility (NIF) located at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) in Livermore, California.

The areas of research performed at the NIF include inertial confinement fusion, laboratory astrophysics and planetary physics, the behavior and properties of matter at extremely high densities and temperatures, and the interaction of radiation with materials at these extreme conditions. The NIF is the world’s largest high-power laser facility, and experiments involve firing the laser into a target, comprised of intricate assemblies of multiple precisely shaped materials.

The Precision Assembly Technician will work as part of a team to characterize and assemble these precision components into the final targets. Completing the assemblies involves handling fragile, small components (from the scale of centimeters down to micrometers with sub-micrometer tolerances), precise positioning of parts under a microscope, application of miniscule, controlled amounts of adhesives, and excellent hand-eye coordination. In addition, the components and assemblies are characterized with microscopy, interferometry, and optical coordinate metrology.

  • Works both independently and in coordination with others, and with engineering support, in characterization, assembly, and testing of precision targets and target components.

  • Works in an ISO 5 / Class 100 cleanroom environment.

  • Works in a fast-paced environment to meet production deadlines.

  • Handles valuable and extremely fragile components daily.

  • Works from engineering drawings, schematics, and informal sketches to perform precision assemblies and quality assurance.

  • Positions and bonds miniscule parts under a microscope, both by-hand and with computerized control.

  • Performs in-process measurements and inspections of components to verify suitability for next steps.

  • Recognizes, reports, and assists with diagnosing assembly and operational problems or issues in equipment and testing situations.

  • Operates computer-controlled LabVIEW instrumentation systems with multiple conditions, such as high pressure, high voltage, cryogens, and radioactive materials.

  • Requires working in a safe manner in accordance with established operating procedures and practices.

  • Always maintains thorough and accurate data recording.

  • Train new employees

Basic Qualifications

  • 2 + years of related experience

  • Associates degree or degree from a vocational school (Additional 3 years of experience in lieu of an Associates degree).

  • Demonstrated strong grasp of geometrical concepts.

  • Strong ability to learn and operate computer software.

  • Ability to learn use of instrumentation, microscopes, and other metrology equipment.

  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings and procedures.

  • Excellent attention to detail with the ability to recognize when specifications are not conformed to.

  • Ability to work independently to meet deadlines and prioritize multiple assignments.

  • Willingness to perform a full day’s work in ISO 5 / Class 100 cleanroom garments.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a STEM related field

  • Excellent Communication Skills

  • Experience within a cleanroom environment

Clearance Requirements:

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE-Q security clearance.

  • U.S. Citizenship required.

The projected compensation range for this position is $56,000-$93,300. There are differentiating factors that can impact a final salary/hourly rate, including, but not limited to, Contract Wage Determination, relevant work experience, skills and competencies that align to the specified role, geographic location (For Remote Opportunities), education and certifications as well as Federal Government Contract Labor categories.
