Summary:

The Emergency Medical Services Emergency Medical Technician (EMT-B) is outward facing and serves our patients as their care representative during transports between Catholic Health facilities. They will have responsibilities for responding to calls and providing Emergency Medical Services to those in need. The EMT-B will work safely and efficiently while operating an emergency vehicle delivering emergency personnel to the scene and patients to the hospitals.

The associate will be certified as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) and perform lifesaving duties. The Advanced Emergency Medical Technician will also assist emergency personnel and be responsible for the safe and efficient operation of an emergency vehicle delivering emergency personnel to the scene and victims to the hospital. The EMT will be required to safely operate a variety of related emergency services equipment. When not driving or assisting emergency personnel on the scene, the employee will perform routine clerical duties as well as maintenance and upkeep of vehicles, equipment, supplies and instruments. The incumbent will work under the supervision of the EMT-Paramedic. An employee in this class is generally not required to supervise others. The EMT will perform all related duties as required.

Typical work activities include driving the ambulance to specified location, following instructions from emergency medical dispatcher; Administer first aid treatment or life support care to sick or injured persons in prehospital settings; Assess the nature and extent of illness or injury to establish and prioritize medical procedures; Attend training classes to maintain certification licensure, keep abreast of new developments in the field, or maintain existing knowledge; Comfort and reassure patients; Communicate with dispatchers or treatment center personnel to provide information about the situation, to arrange reception of victims, or to receive instructions for further treatment; Coordinate work with other emergency medical team members or police or fire department personnel; Decontaminate ambulance interior following treatment of patient with infectious disease, and report case to proper authorities; Immobilize patients for placement on stretcher and ambulance transport, using backboard or other spinal immobilization device; Maintain vehicles and medical and communication equipment and replenish first aid equipment and supplies; Observe, record, and report to physician the patient's condition or injury, the treatment provided, and reactions to drugs or treatment; Perform emergency diagnostic and treatment procedures, such as suction, airway management, or AED monitoring, during ambulance ride.

The EMT will plan, implement, and evaluate individualized patient care based on patient's assessment which reflects the age of patients cared for and demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served.

Responsibilities:

EDUCATION

  • High school diploma or GED

  • Current NYS Department of Health Emergency Medical Technician certification

  • Current New York State driver's license with acceptable driving record

  • Certification in CPR

  • Certification in NIHSS, Hazwhopper, ICS 100, 200HC, 700 & 800 preferred, or required within six (6) months of employment

EXPERIENCE

  • Minimum of three (3) years recent clinical experience in a prehospital setting

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

  • Maintain high quality of patient care by assuming responsibilities for medical care of the patient and carrying out established policies and procedures

  • Respond to requests for emergency medical care, examine patients, and report on patient medical condition to an emergency room nurse or physician in person or via telephone

  • Knowledge in all aspects of patient movement including, but not limited to, lifting from the ground, lifting a patient while on the cot, lifting a patient in a stair chair, carrying a patient down step in a stair chair or cot, moving patients from one surface to another (cot to bed, cot to bench seat, etc.)

  • Administration of emergency medications orally or by injection and to perform intravenous procedures

  • Attend training classes to maintain certification licensure, keep abreast of new developments in the field, or maintain existing knowledge

  • Maintain patient confidentiality

  • Prepare and submit EMS pre-hospital and hospital forms as required

  • Read maps and route ambulance unit

  • Transport patients to appropriate destinations

  • Gather patient billing information and appropriate billing signatures, as required

  • Assure that emergency vehicle is completely inventoried, stocked and in good running order throughout the work shift

  • Complete daily required equipment report

  • Report mechanical problems to EMS Liaison / Ambulance Division and /or Supervisor

  • Maintain the cleanliness of vehicle and area stations

  • Comply with continuing education requirements and maintain all relevant certifications

  • Adhere to established pre-hospital care protocols

  • Function as a public relations representative of our system when dealing with facilities, agencies, etc.

  • Responsible for adhering to all company policies as set forth
