Bridge Inspector 1 - Starting salary is $14.98/hourly with an additional $3.00 premium pay for every hour worked

Function Statement:

The overall function of this position is to perform in-depth inspections of all on-system and off-system bridges in District 07’s five parish area. This position is located in the District 07 Gang 051, District 07 Bridge Inspection Gang of the Department of Transportation and Development and reports directly to Engineer 6. The incumbent must be self-motivated and be able to perform duties many times with or without minimal supervision and also be able to interpret unforeseen conditions as they may arise. The incumbent will participate in appropriate DOTD structured training programs and attend all continuing education classes and conferences deemed necessary to facilitate the performance of required tasks.

While in official capacity, DOTD employees must comply with applicable Louisiana and Civil Service laws, rules, and regulations, as well as DOTD policies, procedures, manuals, and directives.

Job Duties & Responsibilities:

70% Exercises functional supervision over a team of lower level bridge inspectors that are conducting in-depth inspections of all on and off-system bridges in a five (5) parish area (Allen, Beauregard, Calcasieu, Cameron, and Jefferson Davis parishes). Determines condition of all structural components including superstructure, substructure, approaches, waterways, embankments, safety features, and traffic services. Rates each bridge component numerically to indicate if closure or repairs are needed. Prepares the inspection report consisting of the completed inspection report form, narrative, photographs, sketches, and measurements. Issues work orders based on the inspection report to appropriate districtwide or parish gangs. Ensures that all inspections and reports are made in accordance with National Bridge Inspection Standards. Reviews and approves work of lower level bridge inspectors.

10% Creates reports, including sketches, photographs, quantities, and cost estimates of structural accident damage. Submits completed reports to the District Administrator (Engineer 9 DOTD).

10% Contacts Parish Administrators, by telephone and in writing, advising when a deficiency in an off-system bridge structure occurs. Recommends repair or closure actions.

5% Attends classes, seminars, and workshops. Completes all structured training requirements as required by DOTD

5% May be required to perform other duties as necessary including, but not limited to, emergency/disaster support activities.

Minimum Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Possession of a high school diploma or GED.

SUBSTITUTIONS:

Six months of experience in sub-professional engineering, heavy mobile equipment operation, or mobile equipment maintenance will substitute for the high school diploma or GED.

Differs from Engineering Technicians by the presence of bridge inspection duties.

Differs from Bridge Inspector 2 by the absence of experienced-level bridge inspection duties.
