Job Summary

The Nursing Supervisor is responsible to lead the development of an integrated nursing team approach working directly with Director of Nursing. Will supervise and assist in the development of Certified Medical Assistants (CMAs), Medical Assistants (MAs) and Certified Nurse Assistants (CNAs) staff including education, department competencies, evaluations, performance correction, patient safety, and customer service related issues.

Incumbent will assist the nursing staff in reaching their full potential at each stage of their professional development through a focus on enhanced clinical knowledge, technical skill development, clinical decision-making skills, professional performance standards, and interpersonal skill development to be used in the delivery of high-quality patient services. Participates in Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC) accreditation standards, Quality Assurance Performance Improvement (QAPI), Safety, Infection Control, and Tribal, State, and Federal regulations. Assume Director of Nursing job duties during his / her absence.

Job Duties & Responsibilities

  • Supervises all CMA, MA, CNA staff to include but not limited to: recruitment, training, performance, evaluation, disciplinary action, promotion, and separation in cooperation with the Director of Nursing.

  • Assist in coordinating daily staffing to ensure all assignments are identified. Monitor, evaluate, and correct staff performance relating to care/clinical practice regularly.

  • Contribute to the development of less-experienced staff through education and mentorship.

  • Promotes a motivational environment that maintains the department as a cohesive unit.

  • Attend management and other meetings as assigned. Attend management development or training events organized or specified by employer.

  • Maintain patient care services, identify, and establish staff expectation through training and supervisory responsibilities.

  • Review and recommend alterations in care delivery to support the development of evidence-based protocols. Promote and participate in evidence-based practices encouraging the development of new approaches based on clinical research with the clinical area.

  • Assist people who use the services to evaluate their health outcomes and adjust nursing care practices to ensure optimum coordination and delivery of care.

  • Review nursing documentation to ensure policy standards are followed, complete education as needed.

  • Assess staff clinical competencies supporting the nursing department patient service requirements. Identify training needs and work with supervisor to appropriately meet staff needs.

  • Responsible for own personal and professional development and maintain professional knowledge / skills. Keep up-to-date of new developments in nursing practice, nursing literature, and recent nursing research.

Minimum Qualifications (Education & Experience)

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in nursing, management or health administration. Case Management certification or relevant experience may substitute for bachelor’s degree.

  • License: Must have a permanent full and unrestricted license to practice nursing in the State of Alaska, another state, District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.

  • Proof of valid driver’s license with a clean driving record

  • Possess and maintain Basic Life Support (BLS) certificate

  • Experience: Three (3) years progressive administrative management experience.

Preferred Qualifications (Education & Experience)

  • Education: Prefer Bachelor’s degree as a registered nurse with experience in case management.

  • Experience: Experience in ambulatory clinic preferred and a strong commitment to multi-disciplinary teamwork

Necessary Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong understanding and sensitivity to American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) Tribal culture and lifestyle, working effectively with AI/AN populations.

  • Effective oral and written communication skills with sensitivity to the lifestyles of targeted participants.

  • Skills in operating personal computers using a variety of computer software.

  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with management, coworkers, and outside contacts.

  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality and comply with all applicable federal and tribal privacy laws and KIC policy (HIPAA, HITECH, etc.).

  • Ability to learn and apply program/agency operating policies and procedures.

  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and tasks concurrently and meet deadlines.

  • Ability to work independently as well as with teams.

  • Ability to gather, organize and analyze information for nursing operations and personnel.

  • Skill in advising and consulting with KIC health professionals on referral process and other health professionals concerning medical necessity and treatment appropriateness;

  • Knowledge of interrelationship and interdependence among various medical and administrative services and programs

  • Ability to gather, assemble, and analyze facts, draw conclusions and devise solutions to management problems

  • Knowledge and ability to carry out AAAHC accreditation standards;

  • Skill in advising and consulting with KIC health professionals on referral process and other health professionals concerning medical necessity and treatment appropriateness;

  • Skill in writing as would be required for reports, plans, grant proposals, program justifications, etc.;

  • Ability to utilize maximum degree of professionalism and diplomacy with those who may be experiencing a high degree of stress both mentally and/or physically

The environment involves the usual risks and stress of an office environment within an ambulatory health care facility. The employee may be exposed to communicable diseases. Safety precautions for employees include blood drawing for screening of various diseases such as hepatitis, required immunizations, etc. are necessary.

Conditions of Hire

  • May be required to possess and maintain a valid driver's license or capable of obtaining one, as well as be insurable by KIC’s company insurance.

  • Possess and maintain Basic Life Support (BLS) certificate. Must obtain and maintain Pediatric Life Support (PALS), and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certificates within twelve (12) months of hire.

  • KIC complies with the Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988, which states that employees shall not manufacture, distribute, dispense, possess, use, or be under the influence of drugs or alcohol and must pass a pre-employment and subsequent random drug and alcohol screening to be eligible for and maintain employment.

  • KIC has several positions that must comply with the P.L. 101-630 Indian Child Protection and Family Violence Protection Act (ICPA); all employment offers in the "covered" classification are conditional until KIC has received a Federal criminal background check verifying eligibility to work in these programs.
