Compensation Range

Hourly: $25.70 - $39.40 (Amount based on relevant experience, skills, and competencies.)

About This Job

The Commercial Payments Credit & Risk Analyst will be responsible for ensuring proper credit & risk oversight for the Commercial Payment Products area of Commerce Bank. The Credit & Risk Analyst is responsible for underwriting and credit review of high dollar commercial payment products to customers largely on unsecured terms. The Commercial Payments portfolio is comprised of commercial card, merchant accounts, and other commercial payment products, including credit and non-credit based product offerings. The position will work with individual customer accounts in addition to performing basic segmented analytics on various Commercial Payments portfolio’s and industries from a credit and risk standpoint. Commercial Payments Credit & Risk Analysts are a part of the overall risk management and oversight program at Commerce Bancshares, Inc.

Essential Functions

  • Ensure compliance with established policies, procedures, laws, and regulations and adopt proven industry best practices

  • Analyze and evaluate commercial credits and utilize credit processes and systems to assign the appropriate risk rating

  • Underwrite requests within approval authority making independent judgmental decisions and make effective recommendations which exceed the Analyst’s authority

  • Identify existing risks and issues within credit portfolio segments

  • Work with team members on select accounts and ensure compliance with credit policy

  • Utilize third party resources such as D&B, Equifax, Moody’s, S&P, IBISWorld, A.M. Best Company, Bloomberg, etc. to evaluate risk on accounts and portfolios

  • Prepare and present detailed credit write-ups to management and to the Loan Committee summarizing the strengths and weaknesses of select credits and render appropriate recommendations

  • Conduct conference calls as needed with team members of both potential and existing customers to obtain a deep understanding of complex financial data necessary to complete a thorough due-diligence

  • Adopt the department’s strategic plan and key initiatives, identify portfolio risks that should be targeted for review, develop scoping methodologies to sample portfolio segments, and improve work methodologies to make the team more efficient and productive in accordance with regulatory compliance and credit policy

  • Adhere to established service level agreements on all credit reviews

  • Perform other duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required

  • Intermediate knowledge of statistical modeling and its impact on policies, procedures, governing principles, and credit tools

  • Intermediate knowledge of merchant accounts and merchant chargeback risk

  • Intermediate knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)

  • Intermediate knowledge of corporate/legal structures and corporate governance documents and their respective relationships to effectively bind necessary borrowers

  • Basic knowledge of commercial and retail lending documentation and regulations, including consumer credit bureau reports

  • Basic knowledge of business intelligence, data mining, analytics, transmissions, and strategy

  • Basic predictive credit scoring and modeling skills

  • Basic skills interpreting commercial and consumer credit reports and data and using that information to make credit decisions and recommendations

  • Basic skills of interpreting business financials, business tax returns, personal financial statements, and personal tax returns

  • Basic presentation skills

  • Motivated and organized self-starter with strong attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple priorities

  • Inquisitive, agile and strong team player with excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills

  • Ability to remain adaptable and resilient to all situations with an optimistic outlook and cast a positive shadow that is aligned with our culture and Core Values

  • Basic level proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or Business Management or equivalent combination of education and experience required

  • 3+ years credit analysis experience required

  • Credit review, underwriting, regulatory, or credit risk management experience preferred

A reasonable estimate of the current base pay is $25.70 to $39.40 per hour.
