GEARY COUNTY JOB DESCRIPTION

Job Title: Deputy I

FLSA: Non-ExemptSalary Range: \$18.82 - \$36.68/hr.

Reports To:Sergeant PCN: VARIOUS

JOB SUMMARY

Certified Deputy preferred. The job duties of the Deputy I include but are not limited to perform general law enforcement duties in the protection of life and property within Geary County; to patrol county areas; to make investigations at the scene of a crime or traffic accident; to provide security at the Geary County Courthouse; to perform the duties of first responder to accidents; to enforce all federal, state, and local law resolutions; and to provide responsive, courteous and efficient service to County residents and the general public. Employees may be assigned to one or more functional areas. Performs other duties as assigned.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The duties described below are indicative of what the Deputy I might be asked to perform. This job description is to incorporate any County Resolutions for the position of Deputy. This position description is not designed to list all tasks and responsibilities of this position. Geary County reserves the right to revise or change job duties as the need may arise. This position description does not constitute a written or implied contract of employment.

Law Enforcement. Patrols county and related areas to preserve law and order. Answers a variety of calls and complaints involving automobile accidents robberies, domestic disturbances, other misdemeanors and felonies, and citizen assistance calls. Conducts initial investigations and gather evidence. Contacts witnesses and make arrests. Assists and work with outside agencies on the apprehension of criminals and investigations. Transports prisoners to court and testify in court on related activities. Serves civil court processes and warrants. Performs security checks of business and residential properties. Completes reports and records. Inspects equipment for compliance with standards.

Offender Registration. Completes offender registration and updates to registration in an accurate and complete manner. Tracks registration to ensure offenders are registering as required. Performs spot checks at employment and residence of offenders to verify accuracy of information reported. Enters offender information KsORT database and ensure website updated accordingly. Prepares warrant requests for failure to register and forward to investigation for processing.

Canine. Trains canine to perform a variety of law enforcement activities. Cares for canine. Performs demonstrations and outreach at schools and other groups.

Investigations. Investigates felony crimes and misdemeanors to determine suspect(s). Prepares reports for presentation in court and testify in court. Locates and collects physical evidence, latent fingerprints, etc. Reviews cases for completeness and accuracy. Maintains a database of investigation case statistics. Prepares affidavits for search warrants and arrest warrants. Conducts interviews and interrogations. Searches for witnesses and suspects. Obtains statements and confessions. Conducts surveillance, check active areas for criminal activity. Investigates all county deaths classified as coroner cases to determine cause and manner of death. Takes both still and video photographs for evidence. Maintains and coordinates evidence supply room. Trains officers in investigative techniques. Conducts employment background checks. Initiates criminal investigations. Apprehends violent and non-violent offenders. Gives talks to civic organizations, etc.

Ancillary Duties. Patrols area lakes for fish and game violators. Provides securit for Geary County courthouse. Captures stray animals. Serves as first responder to emergency situations until medical unit arrives. May be involved in additional specialized functions such as: hazardous materials, aircraft rescue, swift water rescue. Assists with jail bookings. Assists Sergeant as needed and directed.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required at the time of hire or for the continuation of employment.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

High school diploma or GED.

Certification through the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center

Ability to obtain within 1 year of employment, and maintain throughout employment the following licenses, certifications, and training: radar, tazer, CPR, first aid, HAZ-MAT, and basic firefighting.

A valid Kansas drivers licens
