Description of Work

  • Salary Grade: NC16 * Salary Range: $54,197 - $94,844

    This is an Entry Level Engineer position and will serve as an assistant to the DDC Engineer. Will assist with roadway design on division managed projects and assist higher level engineers with calculations, providing estimates for quantities and project costs as well as assisting in comparison estimates for private engineering firms. Will assist in checking plans and reviewing submittals from private engineering firms. Will supervise lower level technicians and attends project meetings as needed. This position is located in Jackson County with the DDC-Project Development Unit.

Employee must have the ability to respond to the public, local government agencies, Raleigh-based staff and private engineering firms regarding the status and design aspects of highway projects within the Division. Working knowledge of transportation design in accordance with AASHTO guidelines and NCDOT policies and procedures. Have experience in reviewing and checking transportation plans and calculations. Be proficient with various computer applications including MS Office, Microstation, Geopak and corridor modeling. Have the ability to budget time and coordinate schedules with others.

  • Experience in reading and interpreting highway construction plans and contracts

  • Experience in performing engineering analysis and preparing technical reports

  • Considerable knowledge of mathematical functions including algebra, geometry, and trigonometry

  • Experience using computers or electronic tablets

Additional Expectations:

Be able to transverse steep and uneven terrain.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in an applicable field of engineering from an appropriately accredited institution; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Necessary Special Qualification May require registration as a professional engineer by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.
