The Animal Health Diagnostic Center (AHDC) is a high visibility and high-volume veterinary diagnostic laboratory that promotes the health, productivity, and welfare of food-and fiber-producing animals, companion animals, and zoo and wildlife populations. Through its comprehensive veterinary diagnostic services, the AHDC detects animal diseases and supports animal and public health, promotes environmental stewardship, and fosters economic growth.
The Clinical Pathology laboratory, within the Animal Health Diagnostic Center, is dedicated to diagnostic service, education, and research. The lab provides timely, comprehensive, and high-quality diagnostic testing of veterinary specimens in the areas of hematology, diagnostic cytology, clinical chemistry, immunology, and urinalysis.

The Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) seeks a Laboratory Manager to join the Clinical Pathology team. The laboratory manager will report to the Clinical Pathology director to ensure the daily operations and complex functions of the lab effectively meet unit goals while upholding the mission of the organization. Skilled in personnel management and technically adept, this person will act judiciously and empathetically to empower, support, and develop a strong team of individuals who perform diverse functions at a variety of levels. An organizational thinker, the manager will implement procedures and collaborate with various groups to ensure the efficient delivery of services, to maintain quality, and to lead process improvements.


The job responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Maintain effective daily lab operations and support the unit director in the oversight of lab functions; monitor processes, troubleshoot and resolve issues, and support strategic planning
  • Serve as a technical resource with an advanced understanding of clinical pathology testing and procedures
  • Perform project management for unit and organizational initiatives as needed
  • Monitor unit budget and expenditures in collaboration the director
  • Perform personnel management including evaluating performance and creating work schedules
  • Conduct recruitment, hiring, and onboarding processes; implement training programs
  • Employees working in the laboratory must receive the pre-exposure rabies prophylaxis vaccination series prior to or immediately after hire, which will be paid for by the department.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in clinical laboratory science, veterinary technology, cellular biology or related program with 2-4 years of relevant laboratory and personnel experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Compliance monitoring within an established Quality Assurance Program
  • Experience in and/or demonstrated commitment to supporting diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and wellbeing
  • Demonstrated skill in understanding of cultural differences

Preferred Qualifications

  • ASCP certification
  • Experience performing veterinary Clinical Pathology testing

Important Details about the Position

  • This is an onsite position located in Ithaca, NY.
  • We are unable to provide Visa sponsorship, now or in the future, for this position.

This position is exempt from accruing overtime; employees may be required to work outside of normal business hours, including early mornings, evenings, weekends and University holidays and scheduled breaks.
