FirstService Residential Accounting Lead in Irvine, California

Job Overview:

The Accounting Lead is a key leader who works closely with the Controller and accounting team to ensure the accurate, timely and efficient delivery of financial information to MarWest Commercial clients.

The successful candidate will have 3+ years of progressive accounting experience, have broad experience in general ledger accounting, and possess excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Compensation: $67-72k

FirstService Residential will compensate the successful candidate in accordance with the posted range. The salary or wage paid to the successful candidate will be commensurate with experience, education, and specific job responsibilities. For positions designated at a client's property, the salary or wage will also be premised upon the client's directive. The base pay range is subject to change and may be modified in the future.

Job Responsibilities:

Financial Reporting

  • Coordinates with the Accounting leadership team to ensure quarterly & monthly financial statements are prepared in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Assists with the monthly & quarterly financial statement review process.

  • Interact with Accounts Receivable (AR), Accounts Payable (AP) and Banking departments to ensure variances are analyzed and corrected .

  • At times, may assist with the financial production efforts when coverage is needed.

  • Attention to detail to identify potential errors or areas of risk including: variances to budget, linkage to supporting schedules, lingering bank reconciliation items, cash shortages, proper coding of general ledger activities/coding, investment management opportunities, etc.

  • Work closely with the Controller to identify any areas of concern relating to financial production efforts and work to rectify/provide additional resources ensuring timely and accurate financial statement delivery.

  • Assists with new client accounting transitions – review of financials, creation of the trial balance and beginning AR balances, new entity configuration within the accounting system, opening of bank accounts

Operational Support

  • Work closely with other support teams (AP, AR, Operations) on key deliverables and resolve issues as they arise. Client retention is a key measure of success, so performance issues need to be surfaced with functional management as soon as possible.
  • Assist with client investment requests – opening of money market accounts or purchase of CDs

  • Provide generalized and ad-hoc training to Property Managers as needed.

  • Attend Board/Finance Committee meetings when appropriate. Collaborate with Property Management teams and clients to be able to present important issues to the client along with appropriate recommendations.

  • Partner with CPAs on tax matters as appropriate.

  • Demonstrate understanding of internal controls and segregation of duties requirements to drive implementation of best practices.

  • Prepare and maintain procedures for specific job duties.
  • Liaison with IT and other departments on various projects, initiatives and process improvements impacting the Accounting functions, as needed and assigned, including future migration from Jenark to a new platform as approved by MarWest leaders and corporate.
  • Participate in special projects as needed & other duties as assigned

  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Applications, especially Word and Excel, including a working knowledge of complex Excel actions (e.g. pivot tables, v-lookups).
  • Excellent oral presentation and written communication skills.
  • Proficient in English

Education & Experience:

  • 3+ years of progressive accounting experience
  • Strong understanding of debits and credits
  • College degree in business management or equivalent related experience.

  • Hours over and above 40 will occur

Hours over and above normal office hours will occur, including evenings, holidays, and some weekends. Schedule is subject to change based on business needs.
