About the Indiana School for the Blind and Visually Impaired (ISBVI):

The Indiana School for the Blind and Visually Impaired has substantial knowledge and experience in educating students to master the core curriculum and expanded curriculum that teaches them how to navigate their physical, social, and personal worlds. Our expertise is accessed and used by local educators to improve the education of all of Indiana's children who are blind or have low vision. Because of its strong reputation, the school attracts highly qualified administrators and educators, and students from other states whose parents move to Indiana so that their children can attend.

ISBVI is in the process of implementing a strategic plan to transition to a new, state-of-the-art campus.

Salary:

Salary is commensurate with education and job experience.

Role Overview:

This is a full-time position with all classes being on site at the school. You will teach Family and Consumer Science to students with visual impairments.

Teachers must be proficient in Braille OR demonstrate the willingness to become proficient in Braille.

The School will pay for teachers to obtain the Visual Impairment Graduate Licensure through Indiana State University.

A Day in the Life:

The essential functions of this role are as follows:

  • Teach content and skills in Family & Consumer Science courses, utilizing curriculum designated by Newport News Public Schools.

  • Instruct students in citizenship and basic subject matter specified in state law and administrative regulations and procedures of Newport News Public Schools.

  • Adapt Family & Consumer Science material and methods to develop relevant sequential assignments and lesson plans that guide and challenge students.

  • Develop lesson plans and supplementary materials compatible with the division’s basic instructional philosophy and congruent with course standards; provide individualized and small group instruction to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each student and subgroups of students.

  • Evaluate academic and social growth of students, prepare report cards, and keep appropriate records including attendance reports, checklists, census forms, and other recordkeeping activities as necessary.

  • Encourage students to think independently and to express original ideas.

  • Evaluate each student’s progress in meeting the course standards for Family & Consumer Science skills.

  • Establish and maintain standards of student behavior needed to provide an orderly, productive classroom environment.

  • Communicate with parents and school counselors on student progress.

  • Supervises students in assigned out-of-classroom activities during the working day.

  • Participates in faculty committees and the sponsorship of student activities.

  • Administers testing per division testing practices.

  • Models nondiscriminatory practices in all activities.

What You'll Need for Success:

​You must meet the following requirements to be considered for employment:

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Family and Consumer Science.

  • Valid license or emergency license through the State of Indiana.

  • Certification or willingness to acquire a certification in blind and low vision.

  • Proficient in braille or the willingness to become proficient.​

Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:

This role may be utilized in a supervisory capacity based on agency needs.
