Job Description

ORDER OF PREFERENCE: The selection for Maintenance and Construction is made on the basis of fitness and ability with preference given to: Maintenance and Construction District, System-Wide (L689), Authority-Wide and external candidates, respectively.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a Civil Engineering or related field

  • In lieu of a bachelor's degree, a high school graduate or a GED with a minimum of 4 years of experience in structural construction, maintenance or inspections will be considered

  • Successful completion of a National Highway Institute (NHI) Introduction to Safety Inspection of In-Service Bridges Computer-Based Training (CBT) course.

Experience

  • A minimum of one (1) year of experience in structural construction, maintenance or inspections.

Certification/Licensure

  • CDL Class B within 1 year of employment

  • Roadway Worker Protection Qualified Level 2 within 90 days of hire

Preferred

  • Completion of the FHWA approved Comprehensive Bridge Safety Inspection Training course

SUMMARY

The Structural Evaluation Technician A performs inspections, evaluations and assessments of bridges, aerials, tunnels, stations, retaining structures, parking structures and other WMATA structures.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Conducts in-depth visual and mechanical inspections of structures such as bridges, aerials, tunnels, stations, retaining structures, and parking structures, as well as, other structural assets to identify all structural damage, deterioration, defects, and deficiencies that would present a safety hazard or maintenance concern. Ensures all structure inspections are compliant with federal and internal specifications.

  • Prepares inspection reports to document findings, manage records of inspections and elevate any critical deficiencies found in Inspection database for assets.

  • Performs a variety of calculations and computations to determine the severity of a deficiency and properly account for all elements within the asset.

  • Works under the guidance of Structural Evaluation Technician AAs or Supervisory personnel and follows pre-determined work routines on assignments contained and prioritized on monthly cut sheets.

  • Makes sketches and takes detailed photographs to document conditions and use as aides to resolve structural issues to give maintenance personnel and engineers an idea of how the deficiency is affecting the asset.

  • Selects and uses correct tools and test equipment such as, crack monitors and borescopes. Analyzes, evaluates and interprets test results.

  • Performs non-destructive tests on structures to ascertain the reliability of materials such as concrete and steel and measures the size of reinforcing bars.

  • Interprets schematic and layout diagrams, operation manuals, and manufacturer's maintenance instructions. Reads and understands structural blue prints and interprets drawings to evaluate conditions of existing structures.
